Gentamicin has a broad spectrum of antimicrobial action, active against most gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms, including Proteus, Escherichia, Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus. The antibiotic has no effect on anaerobic bacteria, fungi and viruses. When administered intramuscularly, the drug penetrates well into many organs and tissues. Maximum concentration in blood is reached 1 hour after injection. After a single injection the therapeutic concentration of the antibiotic in the body is maintained for 8-12 hours. When administered orally the drug is practically not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and exerts its effect only in the intestine for 12 hours. When parenteral administration gentamicin is excreted unchanged mainly with urine, and when administered orally – with feces. Gentamicin sulfate 4% solution according to GOST 12.1.007-76 refers to Hazard Class 4 – low-hazard substances.
