Papaverine is a myotropic antispasmodic agent.
It has hypotensive effect.
Inhibits phosphodiesterase, causes accumulation of cyclic 3`,5`-AMP and decrease of calcium in the cell; it reduces tone and relaxes smooth muscles of internal organs (GI, respiratory and urogenital systems) and blood vessels.
Causes dilatation of the arteries, promotes increased blood flow, including cerebral blood flow.
In high doses it reduces excitability of the heart muscle and slows intracardiac conduction.
The action on the CNS is weak, but in high doses it has a sedative effect.
Indications
Pain, Hypertension (high blood pressure), Colic, Colitis, Biliary Colic, Biliary Stone Disease, Biliary Dyskinesia
- Spasm of the smooth muscles of the abdominal cavity (cholecystitis, pylorospasm, spastic colitis, renal colic);
- spasm of cerebral vessels
- spasm of peripheral vessels (endarteritis)
- stenocardia (as part of the treatment)
- bronchospasm.

Composition
Composition per tablet:
Papaverine hydrochloride – 40 mg
Excipients:
Potato starch – 149.8 mg,
Stearic acid – 2.7 mg,
Saccharose (granulated sugar) – 157.5 mg.
How to take, the dosage
Inside. Adults take 40-60 mg 3-4 times a day. The highest single dose is 200 mg, the daily dose is 600 mg. Children over 10 years of age take 20 mg 3-4 times a day. Children under 10 years of age are recommended to take the child form of the drug.
Interaction
Papaverine reduces the antiparkinsonian effect of levodopa and the hypotensive effect of methadone.
In combination with barbiturates the antispasmodic effect of papaverine is increased.
When combined with tricyclic antidepressants procainamide reserpine quinidine, the hypotensive effect of papaverine may be increased.
Special Instructions
The administration of ethanol should be avoided during treatment.
The vasodilating effect of Papaverine is reduced by tobacco smoking.
When prescribing Papaverine to patients with diabetes mellitus it should be noted that the tablet contains sucrose as excipients.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity atrioventricular block glaucoma severe hepatic insufficiency elderly age (risk of hyperthermia) children under 10 years of age (for this dosage form). Cautions:
Conditions after cranial trauma chronic renal insufficiency adrenal insufficiency hypothyroidism prostatic hyperplasia supraventricular tachycardia shock pregnancy lactation period (safety not established).
