Xylometazoline belongs to the group of local vasoconstrictors (decongestants) with alpha-adrenomimetic activity.
The drug facilitates nasal breathing by reducing swelling and hyperemia of the mucous membrane and improves discharge of secretions.
The action of the drug starts a few minutes after application and lasts up to 10 hours.
Indications
Acute respiratory diseases with symptoms of rhinitis (runny nose), acute
allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, otitis media (as part of combination therapy for
reducing swelling of the nasopharyngeal mucosa), hay fever, eustachitis, to relieve
performing rhinoscopy.
Pharmacological effect

Special instructions
Long-term use (more than 7 days) can lead to reactive hyperemia of the nasal mucosa and atrophy of the nasal mucosa.
Do not exceed recommended doses. Benzalkonium chloride, which is part of the drug, can cause irritation and swelling of the nasal mucosa.

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to xylometazoline and other components of the drug, arterial hypertension, tachycardia, severe atherosclerosis, glaucoma, atrophic rhinitis, surgical interventions on the meninges (history), children under 2 years of age – for a 0.05% solution (0.0005 g/ml), children under 6 years of age – for a 0.1% solution (0.001 g/ml), thyrotoxicosis, conditions after transsphenoidal hypophysectomy, pregnancy.
Do not use during therapy with monoamine oxidase inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants (including the period of 14 days after their discontinuation), as well as with other drugs that increase blood pressure.
With caution
Breastfeeding period, coronary heart disease (angina), diabetes mellitus, prostatic hyperplasia, hyperthyroidism, porphyria, pheochromocytoma, patients with hypersensitivity to adrenergic drugs, accompanied by insomnia, dizziness, arrhythmia, tremor, increased blood pressure.
Side Effects
With frequent and/or prolonged use – irritation and/or dryness of the nasopharyngeal mucosa, burning, paresthesia, sneezing, hypersecretion; rarely – swelling of the nasal mucosa, nosebleeds, palpitations, tachycardia, arrhythmia, increased blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, headache, insomnia, blurred vision, depression (with prolonged use of high doses), anxiety, fatigue, hallucinations and convulsions (mainly in children), hypersensitivity reactions (angioedema, skin rash, itching).
Benzalkonium chloride, which is part of the drug, can cause irritation and swelling
mucous membrane of the nasal cavity.
Interaction
Concomitant use of xylometazoline with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO)
and tricyclic antidepressants can lead to increased blood pressure
pressure.
Overdose
Symptoms:
in case of an overdose or accidental ingestion of the drug, the following symptoms may develop: nausea, vomiting, cyanosis, fever, a significant decrease in body temperature, shortness of breath, dizziness, increased sweating, headache, bradycardia, arrhythmia, tachycardia, increased blood pressure, which may be followed by a decrease in blood pressure, respiratory depression, coma, convulsions. In young children with overdose, dominant central effects are often observed with convulsions, coma and bradycardia, apnea, as well as an increase in blood pressure that follows hypotension.
Treatment:
symptomatic under medical supervision. Patient monitoring should
be within a few hours. In case of accidental ingestion – gastric lavage,
taking activated carbon.
Recommendations for use
Intranasally. Before use, it is necessary to clean the nasal passages.
Adults and children over 6 years old: 1 injection of 0.1% xylometazoline solution into each nasal passage 2-3 times a day. Should not be used for more than 5-7 days, because… xylometazoline can cause swelling of the nasal mucosa, leading to its atrophy.
Children aged 2 to 6 years use a 0.05% solution of xylometazoline according to
1 injection into each nasal passage 1-2 times a day.
The drug should not be used more than 3 times a day. Duration of use of the drug in
children are determined by a doctor.
