Pharmacological action – stimulating metabolism in CNS.

Pharmacodynamics

Cordiamine stimulates CNS and especially centers of medulla oblongata – respiratory and vasomotor. Excitation of the respiratory center is partly due to the reflex effect associated with excitation of chemoreceptors of the carotid glomeruli. Under the influence of Cordiamine, breathing becomes faster and deeper (especially if it is depressed), BP increases if there is initial hypotension.

The drug has no direct stimulating effect on the heart or vasoconstrictor effect. In high (toxic) doses, Cordiamine may cause clonic convulsions.

Indications

Acute and chronic circulatory disorders, decreased vascular tone, weakened breathing (including patients with infectious diseases and convalescents), acute collapse, asphyxia, shock conditions during and after operations, asphyxia in newborns, drug poisoning, sleeping pills, analgesics.

Composition

1 ml of solution for injection contains 0.25 g of nikethamide.

How to take, the dosage

Integrated into adults in a dose of 1-2 ml 1-3 times a day, children under the skin – 0.1-0.75 ml, depending on age.

Injection into a vein should be done slowly. Cordiamine injection is painful; to reduce the pain, Novocaine may sometimes be injected into the injection site beforehand (1 ml of 0.5-1% solution in adults, in children according to age).

The highest doses for adults are oral and under the skin single 2 ml (60 drops), daily – 6 ml (180 drops). The highest single dose under the skin and into the vein in case of drug poisoning is 5 ml.

Interaction

Convulsive effect of Cordiamine is increased by reserpine, excitatory effect regarding respiratory center is eliminated by anesthetics, the drug effect is weakened by PASC and saluside, the analeptic effect and convulsive effect are weakened by aminazine and other phenothiazine derivatives.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity, epilepsy, history of tonic-clonic seizures, hyperthermia in children.

Side effects

Infiltration or soreness at the injection site of Cordiamine, seizures – in case of overdose.

Overdose

Symptoms: tonic-clonic convulsions.
