Pharmacodynamics
Antimicrobial bacteriostatic agent, sulfonamide. Mechanism of action is due to competitive antagonism with para-aminobenzoic acid and inhibition of dihydropteroat synthetase, disruption of tetrahydrofolic acid synthesis, required for purines and pyrimidines synthesis.
Active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative cocci, Escherichia coli, Shigella spp, Vibrio cholerae, Clostridium perfringens, Bacillus anthracis, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Yersinia pestis, Chlamydia spp, Actinomyces israelii, Toxoplasma gondii.
Pharmacokinetics
When applied topically, the maximum concentration (Cmax) of sulfonamides in cornea (about 3 mg/ml), anterior chamber humour (about 0.5 mg/ml) and iris (about 0.1 mg/ml) is reached within the first 30 minutes after application. Some amount (less than 0.5 mg/ml) persists in the eyeball tissues for 3-4 hours. Penetration of sulfonamides increases with corneal epithelium damage.
Indications
Blepharitis, Conjunctivitis
As part of complex therapy. Conjunctivitis and blepharitis in children and adults, purulent corneal ulcer, prevention and treatment of blenorrhea in newborns, gonorrheal and chlamydial eye diseases in adults.

sulfacetamide – 200 mg
Excipients:
sodium thiosulfate – 1 mg
hydrochloric acid (1 M hydrochloric acid solution) – to pH 8.5
water for injection – to 1 ml
How to take, the dosage
Topically.
For treatment of conjunctivitis in children and adults it is applied into the conjunctival sac 1-2 drops every hour and 5-6 times a day during the next 3-4 days.
For treatment of blepharitis in children and adults the instillation frequency is 6-8 times during the first days and decreases to 3-4 times a day as the condition improves. The duration of treatment is 3-5 days.
For treatment of purulent corneal ulcer in combination therapy in the form of instillations 5-6 times a day for 5-7 days.
In order to prevent blennorrhea in newborns 2 drops in each conjunctival sac immediately after birth and 2 drops after 2 hours during the day, to treat blennorrhea 2 drops every 1-2 hours during the first day and then every 3 hours for 2 weeks.
In treatment of gonorrhea and chlamydia eye diseases in adults in combination therapy 1-2 drops 5-6 times a day for 4-6 weeks. In case of positive dynamics against the background of ongoing treatment the number of instillation drops is reduced for each subsequent week.
Interaction
Concomitant use with procaine and tetracaine reduces the bacteriostatic effect. Incompatibility with silver salts.
Special Instructions
Patients with hypersensitivity to furosemide, thiazide diuretics, sulfonylurea or carbohydrate inhibitors may have hypersensitivity to sulfacetamide. After opening, use within 14 days.
If the patient’s visual acuity is temporarily impaired after using the drug, it is not recommended to drive or engage in activities requiring increased attention and reaction until it is restored.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the ingredients of the drug.
Side effects
Burning, lacrimation, threading, itching in the eyes, transient blurring of vision after injection, allergic reactions.

Overdose
There is no data on drug overdose.
Pregnancy use
There is no sufficient experience in the use of the drug during pregnancy, breast-feeding. It is possible to use sulfacetamide for treatment of pregnant and nursing women by prescription of the attending physician if the expected therapeutic effect exceeds the risk of possible side effects.
