Xylometazoline (imidazoline derivative) is an alpha-adrenomimetic, causes narrowing of blood vessels of nasal mucosa, eliminating its edema and hyperemia, restores nasal passageway patency, facilitates nasal breathing and improves nasal discharge in rhinitis (runny nose) of different origin.

The action of the drug starts within a few minutes after application and lasts up to 10 hours.

Indications

acute rhinitis (including against the background of acute respiratory diseases and allergic rhinitis);
sinusitis;
eustachitis;
runny nose due to allergies and colds;
otitis media (as part of combination therapy to reduce swelling of the nasopharyngeal mucosa);
to facilitate rhinoscopy;
preparing patients for diagnostic manipulations in the nasal passages.

Special instructions

Rhinorus is used with caution in patients with cardiovascular insufficiency, arterial hypertension, and hyperthyroidism. It is undesirable to use the drug Rinorus for a long time for a runny nose due to the risk of destruction of the nasal mucosa, which leads to a constant feeling of nasal congestion.

Contraindications

Side Effects

Local reactions: with frequent and/or prolonged use – irritation and/or dryness of the nasopharyngeal mucosa, burning, paresthesia, sneezing, hypersecretion; rarely – swelling of the nasal mucosa.

Systemic reactions: vomiting, headache, palpitations, increased blood pressure, insomnia, blurred vision, depression (with long-term use of high doses).

Interaction

It is possible to enhance the systemic effect with simultaneous use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO) and tricyclic antidepressants.

Overdose

Symptoms: increased side effects.

Treatment: symptomatic under medical supervision.
