Meniere’s disease; dizziness associated with dysfunction of the vestibular analyzer of various genesis; prevention of motion sickness in kinetosis (condition characterized by nausea, vomiting, dizziness, vestibular disorders and caused by being in a moving object).

In children – treatment of stuttering, tics.

As adjuvant in the complex treatment of alcohol withdrawal syndrome.

Active ingredient

Composition

Each tablet contains:

the active ingredient:

phenibut hydrochloride (phenibut) – 250 mg;

excipients:

lactose monohydrate,

povidone K-25, <

calcium stearate,

potato starch.

How to take, the dosage

Orally, after a meal.

Adults are prescribed 250-500 mg 3 times a day. The maximum single dose for adults is 750 mg, for patients over 60 years – 500 mg. The course of treatment is 2-3 weeks. If necessary, the course may be prolonged to 4-6 weeks. The duration of the course of treatment is determined by the physician with regard to the characteristics of the disease, tolerance of the drug and the effect achieved.

Children aged 8 to 14 years – 250 mg 3 times a day.

For relieving alcohol withdrawal syndrome in the first days of treatment – 250-500 mg three times a day and 750 mg – at night, with gradual reduction of daily dose to the usual for adults.

In Meniere’s disease and syndrome during exacerbation – 750 mg 3 times a day for 5-7 days, when the severity of vestibular disorders decreases – 250-500 mg 3 times a day for 5-7 days and then – 250 mg once a day for 5 days. In a mild course of the disease – 250 mg 2 times a day for 5-7 days with subsequent decrease of the dose to 250 mg once a day for 7-10 days.

For treatment of vertigo in dysfunctions of the vestibular analyzer of vascular and traumatic genesis – 250 mg 3 times a day for 12 days.

For seasickness prophylaxis – 250-500 mg once 1 hour before the expected trip (the effect is dose-dependent). Phenibut is ineffective while pronounced motion sickness (“uncontrollable” vomiting, dizziness and other symptoms).

In patients with hepatic impairment, high doses of phenibut may cause hepatotoxic effect. Patients in this group are prescribed lower doses under monitoring of liver function.

No data on adverse effects of phenibut on patients with impaired renal function when taking therapeutic doses.

Interaction

It prolongs and enhances the effects of sleeping pills, narcotic analgesics, antiepileptic, antipsychotic and anti-Parkinsonian drugs.

Special Instructions

Long-term use requires monitoring of liver function parameters and peripheral blood picture.

Caution should be exercised in patients with gastrointestinal erosive ulcers due to the irritant effect of the drug. Smaller doses of the drug are prescribed for these patients.

The drug contains lactose. It should not be used in patients with rare congenital galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption.

Application in children. The drug in this form of release can be administered to children from 8 years old.

Impact on the ability to drive motor vehicles and other potentially dangerous machinery. It is necessary to refrain from potentially dangerous activities that require increased attention.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, hepatic insufficiency, pregnancy, lactation.

Side effects

Classification of adverse reactions by frequency of development: very common (≥ 1/10); common (≥ 1/100 to < 1/10); infrequent (≥ 1/1000 to < 1/100); rare (≥ 1/10 000 to <1/1000); very rare (<1/10 000); * – frequency of occurrence is not known (it is impossible to determine from available data).

Nervous system disorders*: drowsiness (at the beginning of treatment), increased irritability, agitation, anxiety, dizziness, headache.

Gastrointestinal tract disorders*: nausea (at the beginning of treatment).

Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: rarely – allergic reactions (skin rash, itching).

Hepatic and biliary tract disorders*: with prolonged use of high doses – hepatotoxicity.

Overdose

No cases of overdose have been reported.

Pregnancy use

Adequate and well-controlled studies to evaluate the safety of the drug in women during pregnancy and lactation have not been conducted.
