How to take, the dosage
Topically. Adults and children are put into the conjunctival sac 1 drop 3-4 times a day. Recommended course of treatment is 7-10 days. Extension of treatment course is possible only by doctor’s prescription. Use the drug only according to the method of administration and in those doses that are specified in the instructions. If necessary, please consult a doctor before using the drug.
Interaction
To prevent increased suppressive effects on blood production, co-administration with sulfonamides is not recommended.
Special Instructions
Due to the high toxicity it is not recommended to use unnecessarily for the treatment and prevention of trivial infections, colds, influenza, pharyngitis, bacturia.
Severe complications of the hematopoietic system, as a rule, are associated with the use of high doses (more than 4 g/day) for a long time. Systematic monitoring of peripheral blood counts is necessary during treatment.
In fetus and newborn children the liver is not developed enough to bind chloramphenicol and the drug may accumulate in toxic concentration and lead to “gray syndrome”, therefore in children in the first months of life the drug is prescribed only with vital signs.
Patients who have previously been treated with cytostatic drugs or radiation therapy are used with caution.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, blood disorders, acute intermittent porphyria, marked renal and hepatic dysfunction, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, psoriasis, eczema, fungal skin diseases, period of infancy (up to 4 weeks) and early childhood.
Side effects
Local allergic reactions.
Overdose
Symptoms from the drug can be: “gray syndrome” in premature infants and neonates when treated with high doses (the cause of development is the accumulation of chloramphenicol due to immaturity of liver enzymes and its direct toxic effect on the myocardium) – bluish-gray skin color, low body temperature, nonrhythmic breathing, no reactions, cardiovascular failure.
Pregnancy use
In pregnancy it is possible if the expected effect of therapy exceeds the potential risk to the fetus (adequate and strictly controlled studies on use during pregnancy have not been conducted, the ability of chloramphenicol to penetrate the placenta should be taken into account).
