Iodine, 5% 25 ml

An antiseptic agent. The main active ingredient is molecular iodine, which has antiseptic properties. When applied to large surfaces of the skin, iodine has a resorptive effect: it participates in the synthesis of thyroxine and triiodothyronine.

Ethanol slows down excretion of iodine and reduces its irritant effect on tissues.

It has a bactericidal effect on both Gram-positive and Gram-negative flora (most active on Streptococcus spp. and Escherichia coli) as well as on pathogenic fungi and yeast. Most strains of Staphylococcus spp. are resistant, but during long-term use of the drug in 80% of cases suppression of staphylococcal flora is observed. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is resistant.

Indications

Inflammatory and infectious skin diseases, abrasions, cuts, microtraumas, inflammatory infiltrates; treatment of wound edges, skin before injections, punctures, catheterization.

Composition

Per 100 ml:

active ingredient: iodine – 5 g,

excipients:

potassium iodide – 2 g,

ethanol (in terms of anhydrous ethanol) – 40.58 g,

purified water – to obtain a solution of mass 100 g.

How to take, the dosage

Externally. Lubricate affected or to be treated areas of the skin.

Interaction

Pharmaceutically incompatible with essential oils, ammonia solutions, enzymes, reducing agents and alkalis, disinfectant medicines containing mercury; an explosive mixture is formed with white precipitate mercury (mercury amidochloride).

Special Instructions

Light and ambient and body temperature above 40°C accelerate the breakdown of active iodine.

The preparation should have a dark brown color. Discoloration of the solution indicates destruction of the complex with transition of active iodine to iodide-ion and decrease of the effectiveness of the drug.

Alkaline or acidic environment, the presence of fat, pus, blood weaken the antiseptic activity.

The use of the drug according to the instructions for medical use does not negatively affect performance of hazardous activities requiring special attention and quick reactions. Eye contact should be avoided.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to iodine.

Internal administration – pulmonary tuberculosis, nephritis, nephrosis, adenomas (including thyroid), furunculosis, acne, chronic pyoderma, hemorrhagic diathesis, urticaria, pregnancy, children under 5 years.

Side effects

Skin irritation, allergic reactions (skin itching), with prolonged use on extensive wound surfaces – iodism (rhinitis, urticaria, Quincke’s edema, increased salivation, lacrimation, acne).

Overdose

Overdose may cause iodization, skin irritation and burns.

Treatment: symptomatic; wash off excess drug with clean running water.

Pregnancy use

It is not recommended to use the drug during pregnancy. Administration during breast-feeding is possible if the expected benefits to the mother exceed the potential risk to the baby. It is necessary to consult the doctor.
