Iodine, alcohol 5% 25 ml

An antiseptic agent.

The main active ingredient is molecular iodine which has antiseptic properties.

Iodine has a resorptive effect when applied to extensive skin surfaces: it affects thyroid function.

The local action is due to the ability of elemental iodine, to precipitate tissue proteins.

The preparation that detaches elemental iodine has a much less pronounced irritating effect.

The effect of the drug on metabolism is manifested by increased dissimilation processes.

Indications

Inflammatory and infectious skin diseases, abrasions, cuts, microtraumas, wounds;

Myositis, neuralgia, inflammatory infiltrates;

Disinfection of the operating field (pre- and postoperative treatment of the operating field, injections, punctures, catheterization), the edges of wounds, the surgeon’s hands.

Composition

Iodine – 5 g;

Potassium iodide – 2 g;

Purified water,

Hyalcohol 95% (ethanol) – to obtain a solution of 100 ml.

How to take, the dosage

Externally, the affected or to be treated areas of the skin are smeared.

When treating the operating field the skin is wiped twice with a sterile gauze swab dipped in the solution.

The total treatment time is 4-6 minutes.

Interaction

Pharmaceutically incompatible with essential oils, ammonia solutions, white sedimentary mercury (forms an explosive mixture).

Special Instructions

Light and temperature above 40°C accelerate the decomposition of active iodine. The preparation should have a dark brown color. Discoloration of the solution indicates destruction of the complex with the transition of active iodine to iodide-ion and decreased effectiveness of the drug.

Alkaline or acidic environment, the presence of fat, pus, blood weaken the antiseptic activity.

Contact with eyes should be avoided.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity, thyrotoxicosis, herpetiform dermatitis.

Side effects

Skin irritation, with prolonged use on extensive wound surfaces – iodism (rhinitis, urticaria, Quincke’s edema, salivation, lacrimation, acne).

Overdose

In case of overdose, iodization, skin irritation and burns are possible.
