Vitamin B9 (folic acid) is found in fresh vegetables (beans, spinach, tomatoes, etc.), as well as in the liver and kidneys of animals. In the body it is converted to tetrahydrofolic acid, which is necessary for the maturation of megaloblasts and their transformation into normoblasts. With its deficiency megaloblastic type of hematopoiesis develops. It plays an important role in the metabolism of purines and pyrimidines, nucleic acid synthesis, amino acid metabolism (glycine, methionine and histidine).
After oral administration folic acid combines in the stomach with intrinsic Castl’s factor (a specific glycoprotein) and is absorbed in the upper duodenum. It is almost completely bound to plasma proteins. Subjected to activation in the liver under the influence of the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase, turning into tetrahydrofolic acid. Vitamin B9 deficiency impairs mitotic cell division, maturation and function.
Deficiency of folic acid (and vitamin B12) leads to the development of megaloblastic anemia. Its preparations are prescribed for the prevention and treatment of megaloblastic anemia, sprue, drug and radiation anemia and leukopenia, post-resection anemia, chronic gastroenteritis, intestinal tuberculosis, folic acid deficiency; for the prevention of folic acid deficiency in the body (including during pregnancy and lactation).
