Meloxicam, which is part of the drug, belongs to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs of the class of oxycams (derivative of phenolic acid), has a pronounced anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effect.

The drug selectively inhibits enzyme cyclooxygenase-P, inhibiting synthesis of prostaglandins (inflammatory mediators) and providing anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effect, slightly affects cyclooxygenase-1, minimizing side effects, such as bleeding, ulceration and renal failure.

The bioavailability of the drug when taken orally with food in cats and dogs is 100%. Peak serum concentrations in dogs, are 0.464 mcg/ml after 7.5 hours, in cats – after 1.5 hours. Clearance of meloxicam in dogs is (0.17±0.02) ml/min, and half-life is from 12 to 36 hours, in cats – from 15 to 21 hours. Meloxicam is metabolized in the liver and excreted unchanged in the urine and feces.

Side Effects

When using the drug, damage to the gastrointestinal tract, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, melena and apathy are possible.

Contraindications

The drug should not be used in animals with hypersensitivity to meloxicam. Meloxicam should be used with extreme caution in animals with dehydration, hypovolemia, or low blood pressure due to an increased risk of renal toxicity.

Do not use in animals with severe heart, liver or kidney diseases, gastric and intestinal ulcers, bleeding, poisoning with anticoagulants (coumarin, warfarin, bromodialone) or animals that have been treated with anticoagulants, in the last trimester of pregnancy and during lactation.
