Meloxicam, which is part of the drug, belongs to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs of the class of oxycams (derivative of phenolic acid), has a pronounced anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effect.

The drug selectively inhibits enzyme cyclooxygenase-P, inhibiting synthesis of prostaglandins (inflammatory mediators) and providing anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effect, slightly affects cyclooxygenase-1, minimizing side effects, such as bleeding, ulceration and renal failure.

The bioavailability of the drug when taken orally with food in cats and dogs is 100%. Peak serum concentrations in dogs, are 0.464 mcg/ml after 7.5 hours, in cats – after 1.5 hours. Clearance of meloxicam in dogs is (0.17±0.02) ml/min, and half-life is from 12 to 36 hours, in cats – from 15 to 21 hours. Meloxicam is metabolized in the liver and excreted unchanged in the urine and feces.

The drug is used in cats and dogs as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic in the treatment of acute, chronic inflammatory or dystrophic diseases of the musculoskeletal system: osteitis, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, spondylosis, ankylosing spondylitis, calcinosis of intervertebral discs, dysplastic conditions, as well as for recovery after fractures, arthroplasty operations and treatment of injuries.

Petkam Tabs 0.5 mg is administered orally to dogs on the first day of treatment at 2 tablets per 5 kg of body weight, on the second day of treatment and further at 1 tablet per 5 kg of body weight, once a day.

Petkam Tabs 2.0 mg is administered orally to dogs on the first day of treatment 2 tablets per 20 kg of body weight of the animal, on the second day of treatment and further – 1 tablet per 20 kg of body weight of the animal, once a day.

The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the animal’s condition. For acute pain, the recommended course of treatment for dogs is 5-7 days, and for chronic pain – up to 28 days.

In cats the drug is administered orally at the rate of 1 tablet per 5 kg of the animal’s body weight, once. In case of severe diseases, the course of treatment of cats can be prolonged, but not more than four days.

Contraindications

The drug should not be used in animals with hypersensitivity to meloxicam. With particular caution meloxicam should be used in animals with dehydration, hypovolemia or low blood pressure due to an increased risk of renal toxicity.

Do not use in animals with severe heart, liver or kidney disease, peptic ulcer disease, bleeding, poisoning with anticoagulants (coumarin, warfarin, bromodialone) or animals that have been treated with anticoagulants, in the last trimester of pregnancy and during lactation.
