Pharmacological properties
Pharmacokinetics
. When applied topically, the Cmax of sulfonamides in the cornea (about 3 mg/mL), anterior chamber moisture (about 0.5 mg/mL), and iris (about 0.1 mg/mL) is reached within the first 30 minutes after application. Some amount (less than 0.5 mg/ml) persists in the eyeball tissues for 3-4 hours. Penetration of sulfonamides increases if the corneal epithelium is damaged.
Pharmacodynamics
Sulfacyl sodium is a sulfonamide antimicrobial agent of broad spectrum action. It has bacteriostatic action. Mechanism of action is related to competitive antagonism with PABA and inhibition of dihydropteroatsintase which leads to disruption of tetrahydrofolic acid synthesis, required for purine and pyrimidine synthesis.
Active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative cocci, Escherichia coli, Shigella spp., Vibrio cholerae, Clostridium perfringens, Bacillus antracis, Corynebacterium diphteriae, Yersinia pestis, Chlamydia spp., Actinomyces israelii, Toxoplasma gondii.
Indications
– conjunctivitis
– blepharitis
– purulent corneal ulcer
– prevention and treatment of blennorrhea in infants
– gonorrheal and chlamydial eye disease in adults
Active ingredient
Composition
1 ml of the solution contains:
The active substance: sodium sulfacetamide (sulfacyl sodium) – 200 mg.
Auxiliary substances: sodium thiosulfate – 1.0 mg, hydrochloric acid (hydrochloric acid) – to pH 7.5 – 8.7, purified water – to 1 ml.
How to take, the dosage
For the treatment of conjunctivitis in children and adults it is instilled into the conjunctival sac 1-2 drops every hour, in the next 3-4 days – 5-6 times a day.
For treatment of blepharitis in children and adults the instillation frequency is 6-8 times during the first days and decreases to 3-4 times a day as the condition improves. The duration of treatment is 3-5 days.
For treatment of purulent corneal ulcer as part of complex therapy in the form of instillations 5-6 times a day for 5-7 days.
To prevent blennorrhea in newborns 2 drops drop drops are put into each conjunctival sac immediately after birth and 2 drops every 2 hours during the day. For treatment of blennorrhea in newborns – 2 drops in each conjunctival sac every 1 to 2 hours during the first day, then every 3 hours thereafter. The duration of treatment is 2 weeks.
