An antibacterial agent for topical use in ophthalmology, a sulfonamide derivative. It has a wide range of antimicrobial action.
It has a bacteriostatic effect. Mechanism of action is connected with competitive antagonism with PABA and competitive inhibition of dihydropteroate synthetase which leads to disruption of tetrahydrofolic acid synthesis, required for purine and pyrimidine synthesis.
Sulfacetamide is active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (including pathogenic cocci, Escherichia coli), Chlamydia spp.
Indications
Purulent corneal ulcers, conjunctivitis, blepharitis, gonorrheal eye disease in infants and adults, prevention of blennorrhea in newborns.

Composition
1 ml of drops contains:
Active substance:
Sulfacetamide 200 mg.
Associates:
Sodium thiosulfate – 1 mg,
Hydrochloric acid 1 M – to pH 7.5-8.7,
Purified water – up to 1 ml.
How to take, the dosage
Apply 2-3 drops into the lower conjunctival sac of each eye 5-6 times a day.
To prevent blennorrhea in newborns 2 drops of the solution are put into the eyes immediately after birth and 2 drops after 2 hours.
Interaction
Sulfacetamide is incompatible with silver salts when used topically.
Special Instructions
Patients with hypersensitivity to furosemide, thiazide diuretics, sulfonylurea, or carbohydrate inhibitors may have hypersensitivity to sulfacetamide.
Contraindications
High sensitivity to sulfacetamide and other sulfonamide drugs.
Side effects
Local reactions: itching, redness, swelling.
