Oxymetazoline belongs to the group of alpha-adrenergic stimulants for local use.

It has a vasoconstrictor effect.

In intranasal administration reduces swelling of the mucous membrane of the upper airways, resulting in easier nasal breathing and opening of the mouths of the sinuses and eustachian tubes.

The action of the drug is seen 5 minutes after application and lasts for 8-12 hours.

Indications

Treatment of acute respiratory diseases accompanied by a runny nose;
allergic rhinitis;
vasomotor rhinitis;
to restore drainage in case of inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, eustachitis, otitis media;
to eliminate swelling before diagnostic manipulations in the nasal passages.

Pharmacological effect

When administered intranasally, it reduces swelling of the mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract, which leads to easier nasal breathing and the opening of the mouths of the paranasal sinuses and eustachian tubes.

Contraindications

The use of the drug is prohibited in a number of cases:
taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors during the previous 2 weeks, within 2 weeks after their discontinuation;
atrophic (dry) rhinitis;
angle-closure glaucoma;
pregnancy;
condition after transsphenoidal hypophysectomy;
lactation period;
hypersensitivity to oxymetazoline and other components of the drug.

Sialor®rino should also be used with caution in patients suffering from chronic renal failure, pheochromocytoma, thyroid dysfunction, coronary heart disease, arterial hypertension and other diseases of the cardiovascular system, diabetes mellitus, prostatic hyperplasia (urinary retention), as well as those taking bromocriptine and tricyclic antidepressants.

Side Effects

Burning or dryness of the mucous membranes of the nasal cavity, dryness of the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat.

Sneezing.

An increase in the volume of secretions released from the nose (after the effect of the drug wears off).

Strong feeling of nasal congestion (reactive hyperemia).

Interaction

When used simultaneously with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (including the period within 14 days after their discontinuation) and tricyclic antidepressants, an increase in blood pressure may be observed.

Overdose

Symptoms: nausea, increased blood pressure, tachycardia, depression of the central nervous system.

Treatment: symptomatic.
