Features

Absorption is high. Bioavailability when administered orally is 10%, which is due to the pronounced effect of “first passage” through the liver. Time to reach Cmax in blood plasma is 1-3 hours.

The binding to plasma proteins is 50%. It penetrates through the placental barrier. There is no data on the ability of acetylcysteine to penetrate through the BBB and excreted with breast milk.

Metabolism and excretion

It is quickly metabolized in the liver to form pharmacologically active metabolite – cysteine, as well as diacetylcysteine, cystine and mixed disulfides.

Extracted by the kidneys as inactive metabolites (inorganic sulfates, diacetylcysteine). T1/2 is about 1 hour.

Pharmacokinetics in special clinical cases

Hepatic impairment leads to prolongation of T1/2 to 8 h.
