Piperazine, tablets 500 mg 10 pcs

Piperazine is an antihelminthic drug, effective for ascariasis and enterobiasis. It has a paralyzing effect on nematodes: by disrupting the function of their neuromuscular system it causes paralysis of the musculature.

The effectiveness of dehelminthization by the drug is 90-95%, and with repeated use it can be about 100%.

Because piperazine does not destroy ascarids, there is no danger of absorption of biological toxic products of their decomposition. It is minimally toxic.

Indications

Infestation with ascarids (ascariasis) and pinworms (enterobiasis).

Composition

calcium stearate,

corn starch,

sodium carboxymethyl starch (sodium starch glycolate).

How to take, the dosage

Ingestion. In treatment of ascariasis the drug is prescribed for two consecutive days, 2 times a day 1 hour before or 0.5-1 hours after meals in the following doses:

Adults and children from 15 years – 1.5-2.0 g;

Children aged 3 to 5 years – 0.5 g (daily dose of 1.0 g),

5 to 8 years old – 0.75 g (daily dose of 1.5 g),

8 to 12 years old – 1.0 g (daily dose of 2.0 g),

13 to 15 years old – 1.5 g (daily dose of 3.0 g).

It is possible to use the drug in a single dose of 0.5 g to 4.0 g over one day, depending on age.

The maximum daily dose in adults is 4.0 g.

In case of enterobiasis the preparation is prescribed in the same dose for 5 days in a row (1 to 3 courses of therapy with 7 days’ break between the courses) or for one day in a single dose from 0,5 g to 4,0 g depending on the age. During intervals between cycles an overnight enema is prescribed to mechanically flush out pinworms (4-5 glasses of water for adults, 1-2 glasses for children with the addition of ½ teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate per glass of water).

Interaction

Worsens the severity of extrapyramidal disorders caused by chlorpromazine.

Special Instructions

Piperazine adipinate treatment does not require a special diet or patient preparation. Laxatives are prescribed only if they are prone to constipation.

During the treatment of enterobiasis a strict hygienic regime is observed.

The treatment can be carried out as an outpatient.

Contraindications

Side effects

Nausea, abdominal pain of spastic nature, headache.

In patients with renal failure – neurotoxic complications (muscle weakness, tremor, euphoria, hallucinations, visual impairment, movement coordination disorders).

Overdose

Symptoms: tremor, muscle weakness.

Treatment: gastric lavage, administration of activated charcoal or other enterosorbents, prescription of saline laxatives. If necessary – oxygenation and transfusion therapy. In case of neurological symptoms, thiamine is administered.
