Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Picloxidine is a derivative of biguanides, antimicrobial agent, has antiseptic action. It is active against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Eberthella typhosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Shigella dysenteriae, Bacillus subtilis, Chlamydia trachomatis, some viruses and fungi.
Pharmacokinetics
In topical administration systemic absorption of picloxidine is low.
Indications
Adults and children from 0 years:
- bacterial infections of the anterior eye;
- dacryocystitis;
- prevention of infectious complications in the postoperative period after surgical interventions in the anterior eye.

How to take, the dosage
For the treatment of bacterial infections, 1 drop of the drug is put into the conjunctival sac 2-6 times a day. The duration of treatment is 10 days. The appropriateness and necessity of prolongation of the treatment period beyond 10 days should be determined by a physician.
In the postoperative period 1 drop 3 to 4 times a day is injected.
In order to prevent postoperative complications (pre-operative preparation) 1 to 2 drops of the drug are put into the conjunctival sac immediately before surgical intervention.
The procedure for working with the bottle:
- Turn the vial counterclockwise and remove the cap.
- Carefully turn the vial upside down without touching the tip with your fingers and place it between your thumb and forefinger with one hand.
- Tilt your head backwards, place the tip of the vial over your eye and with the forefinger of your other hand pull the lower eyelid down. Slightly press the bottle and drop the desired amount into the conjunctival sac of the eye.
Contact of the tip of the open bottle with the surface of the eye and your hands should be avoided. - After use put the cap on the bottle and close it clockwise rotating motion.
After opening the bottle the drug may be used within 1 month. At the end of this period the product should be discarded.
The product should not be used if the vial is visibly damaged.
Interaction
If several medications need to be injected into the conjunctival cavity, they must be applied separately with an interval of at least 15 minutes.
Special Instructions
To prevent contamination of the drug solution when injecting, patients should avoid contact of the open vial tip with the eye and skin.
In order to prevent the drug from entering the systemic bloodstream through the nasal mucosa, it is recommended that finger pressure be applied to the inner corner of the eye for 2 minutes after injection.
If several topical ophthalmic preparations are used, a break of at least 15 minutes should be taken between injections. Do not use for subconjunctival injections or for injection into the anterior chamber of the eye. Pictoride-SOLOfarm eye drops do not change the color of contact lenses (including soft hydrophilic ones), but contact lens wear is contraindicated in case of infectious diseases.
Influence on ability to drive vehicles and machinery
Transient blurring of vision may occur after injection, which may affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. If these symptoms occur after injection, the patient should wait until clarity of vision is restored before driving or operating machinery.
Contraindications
Individual hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.
Side effects
Allergic reactions may develop, manifested by conjunctival hyperemia.
Overdose
There are no data on overdose of the drug.
If excessive amount of the drug gets into the eyes, the eyes should be rinsed with sterile saline solution.
Pregnancy use
Since the use of the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been studied, it is not recommended to prescribe the drug to pregnant and lactating women.
