Pharmacodynamics
Parenteral administration has a CNS depressant effect. Depending on the dose, sedative, hypnotic or narcotic effect may be observed.
Magnesium sulfate has a suppressive effect on neuromuscular transmission. It decreases excitability of the respiratory center; in high doses when administered parenterally it may cause respiratory paralysis.
Lower blood pressure, including in connection with a general sedative effect (the effect is more pronounced in hypertension). Magnesium sulfate is excreted by the kidneys; in the process of excretion diuresis is increased.
The antagonists of magnesium ion are calcium ions. A decrease in calcium in the blood is accompanied by an increase in the action of magnesium.
