Maalox is an antacid drug. It neutralizes free hydrochloric (hydrochloric) acid, which leads to a decrease in peptic activity of gastric juice.

It does not cause secondary hypersecretion. It also has an adsorptive and enveloping effect, reducing the impact of damaging factors on the mucous membrane.

Maalox does not cause constipation. It is used as an adsorptive, coating and antacidic agent for increased acidity of gastric juice. Maalox soothes pain in the upper digestive tract for several hours.

Indications

Peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum in the acute phase;
acute gastroduodenitis;
chronic gastroduodenitis with normal or increased secretory function in the acute phase;
hiatal hernia;
reflux esophagitis;
phenomena of dyspepsia (and their prevention) resulting from the use of certain medications (including NSAIDs, corticosteroids);
discomfort or pain in the epigastrium, heartburn due to errors in diet, excessive consumption of coffee, alcohol, nicotine.

Special instructions

Contraindications

Severe renal dysfunction, hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.

Side Effects

From the digestive system: rarely – constipation, nausea, vomiting, changes in taste.

Other: with long-term use and in case of impaired renal function – increased levels of magnesium and/or aluminum in the blood, phosphorus deficiency in the body, encephalopathy; in older people – exacerbation of diseases of the musculoskeletal system, Alzheimer’s disease.

Interaction

When taken simultaneously with Maalox, the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, digoxin, indomethacin, acetylsalicylic acid (and other salicylates), histamine H2 receptor blockers, beta-blockers, aminazine, diflunisal, isoniazid, phenytoin, and phosphorus-containing drugs is reduced.

With simultaneous use, Maalox may increase the level of quinidine in the blood plasma, which increases the risk of overdose.
