Maalox is an antacid drug. It neutralizes free hydrochloric (hydrochloric) acid, which leads to a decrease in peptic activity of gastric juice.

It does not cause secondary hypersecretion. It also has an adsorptive and enveloping effect, reducing the impact of damaging factors on the mucous membrane.

Maalox does not cause constipation. It is used as an adsorptive, coating and antacidic agent for increased acidity of gastric juice. Maalox soothes pain in the upper digestive tract for several hours.

How to take, the dosage

Maalox is usually taken 1-1.5 hours after a meal or when pain occurs.

Adults: 1-2 tablets 3-4 times a day.

Interaction

Concomitant use of Maalox reduces absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, digoxin, indomethacin, acetylsalicylic acid (and other salicylates), histamine H2-receptor blockers, beta-adrenoblockers, aminazine, diflunisal, isoniazid, phenytoin, phosphorus containing drugs.

When used concomitantly, Maalox may increase the plasma level of quinidine, which increases the risk of overdose.

Special Instructions

A 2-hour interval between taking Maalox and other medicinal products should be observed.

When the drug is prescribed to children, the dosage regimen should be determined individually; it is not recommended to use the drug in children under 12 years of age without medical advice.

Contraindications

Side effects

The digestive system: rarely – constipation, nausea, vomiting, changes in taste.

Others: with long-term use and with impaired renal function – increased levels of magnesium and/or aluminum in the blood, phosphorus deficiency in the body, encephalopathy; in the elderly – exacerbation of diseases of the musculoskeletal system, Alzheimer’s disease.

Pregnancy use

It is contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation.
