Levocetirizine is the active substance of the drug Levocetirizine-Teva is the R-enantiomer of cetirizine, which belongs to the group of competitive histamine antagonists and blocks H1-histamine receptors.
Levocetirizine influences the histamine-dependent stage of allergic reactions and also reduces migration of eosinophils, decreases vascular permeability and limits release of inflammatory mediators.
Levocetirizine prevents development and facilitates allergic reactions, has antiexudative and antipruritic action and practically has no anticholinergic and antiserotonic action.
In therapeutic doses it has practically no sedative effect.
Indications
– treatment of symptoms of year-round (persistent) and seasonal (intermittent) allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis, such as itching, sneezing, nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, lacrimation, conjunctival hyperemia; hay fever (hay fever);
– urticaria;
– other allergic dermatoses, accompanied by itching and rashes.
With caution:
– for chronic renal failure (correction of the dosage regimen is necessary);
– in elderly patients (with an age-related decrease in glomerular filtration);
– in patients with spinal cord injury, prostatic hyperplasia, as well as in the presence of other factors predisposing to urinary retention, since levocetirizine may increase the risk of urinary retention;
– when used simultaneously with alcohol (see “Interaction with other drugs”);
– when prescribed to pregnant women and during breastfeeding.
Pharmacological effect
Levocetirizine – the active substance of the drug Levocetirizine-Teva – is the R-enantiomer of cetirizine, which belongs to the group of competitive histamine antagonists and blocks H1-histamine receptors.
Levocetirizine has an effect on the histamine-dependent stage of allergic reactions, and also reduces the migration of eosinophils, reduces vascular permeability, and limits the release of inflammatory mediators.
Levocetirizine prevents the development and facilitates the course of allergic reactions, has an antiexudative, antipruritic effect, and has virtually no anticholinergic and antiserotonin effects.
In therapeutic doses it has virtually no sedative effect.
Special instructions
During the treatment period, it is necessary to refrain from engaging in potentially hazardous activities that require increased concentration and speed of psychomotor reactions, as well as from drinking ethanol.
Active ingredient
Levocetirizine
Composition
1 tablet contains:
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity (including to piperazine derivatives), severe chronic renal failure (creatinine clearance less than 10 ml/min), pregnancy, lactation, children (up to 6 years).
With caution. CRF, old age (possibly decreased glomerular filtration rate).
Side Effects
Headache, drowsiness, dry oral mucosa, fatigue, rarely – migraine, dizziness, dyspepsia, allergic reactions (angioedema, rash, urticaria, itching).
Interaction
Theophylline (400 mg/day) reduces the total clearance of levocetirizine by 16%, while the kinetics of theophylline does not change.
Combined use with macrolides or ketoconazole did not cause significant changes in the ECG.
Overdose
Symptoms: drowsiness, in children – anxiety, irritability.
Treatment: gastric lavage, activated carbon, symptomatic therapy. There is no specific antidote. Hemodialysis is not effective.
