Iodine, alcohol 5% 25 ml
€3.83 €3.00
An antiseptic agent. The main active ingredient is molecular iodine, which has antiseptic properties. When applied to extensive skin surfaces, iodine has a resorptive effect: it actively affects metabolism, participates in the synthesis of thyroxine, has a proteolytic effect. Ethyl alcohol is a high molecular weight compound which slows down iodine excretion and reduces its irritating effect on tissues.
It has a bactericidal effect, both on Gram-positive flora (most active on Streptococcus and Escherichia coli) and on pathogenic fungi and yeast. Staphylococcus aureus is more persistent flora, but it disappears with long-term use of the drug in 80% of cases. Pseudomonas bacillus is resistant. The drug is little toxic.
Pharmacokinetics
On contact with the skin 30% is converted to iodides, and the remainder penetrates tissues and organs, selectively absorbed by the thyroid gland. It is excreted by the kidneys (mainly), intestines, sweat glands, with milk during lactation.
Indications
Inflammatory and infectious skin diseases, abrasions, cuts, microtraumas, wounds; inflammatory infiltrates; treatment of wound edges and skin before injections, punctures, catheterization.
Pharmacological effect
Pharmacotherapeutic group: antiseptic.
ATX code [D08AG03]
Pharmacological properties:
Pharmacodynamics
Antiseptic. The main active ingredient is molecular iodine, which has antiseptic properties. When applied to large surfaces of the skin, iodine has a resorptive effect: it actively affects metabolism, enhances dissimilation processes, participates in the synthesis of thyroxine, and has a proteolytic effect.
It has a bactericidal effect on gram-positive flora (most active on streptococcal flora and E. coli), as well as on pathogenic fungi and yeast. A more persistent flora is staphylococcus, but with prolonged use of the drug in 80% of cases it disappears. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is resistant.
The drug is slightly toxic.
Pharmacokinetics
Upon contact with skin, 30% is converted into iodides, and the rest into active iodine. Partially absorbed. The absorbed part penetrates tissues and organs and is selectively absorbed by the thyroid gland. It is secreted by the kidneys (mainly), intestines, sweat and mammary glands.
With caution:
Children’s age up to 12 years.
Special instructions
When used together with yellow mercury ointment, the formation of mercury iodide, which has a cauterizing effect, is possible. Light and temperature above 40℃ accelerate the breakdown of active iodine. The drug should have a dark brown color. Discoloration of the solution indicates the destruction of the complex with the transition of active iodine to iodide ion and a decrease in the effectiveness of the drug. Alkaline or acidic environment, the presence of fat, pus, blood weaken the antiseptic activity.
Impact on the ability to drive vehicles and machinery:
The use of the drug according to the instructions for medical use does not have a negative impact on the performance of potentially hazardous activities that require special attention and quick reactions. Avoid contact with eyes.
