Iodine has a local irritant, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effect.

Iodine forms iodamines and destroys microorganisms, by absorption it actively affects metabolism by enhancing the processes of desomilation; helps to reduce blood cholesterol levels.

Indications

Inflammatory and infectious skin diseases, abrasions, cuts, microtraumas, wounds; myositis, neuralgia, inflammatory infiltrates; treatment of wound edges and skin before injections, punctures, catheterization.

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics
Antiseptic. The main active ingredient is molecular iodine, which has antiseptic properties. When applied to large surfaces of the skin, iodine has a resorptive effect: it actively affects metabolism, enhances dissimilation processes, participates in the synthesis of thyroxine and triiodothyronine, and has a proteolytic effect. Ethyl alcohol slows down the excretion of iodine and reduces its irritating effect on tissue.
It has a bactericidal effect on both gram-positive and gram-negative flora (most active on streptococcal flora (Streptococcus spp.) and E. coli (Escherichia coli), as well as on pathogenic fungi and yeasts. A more resistant flora is staphylococcus (Staphyloccocus spp.), however, with long-term use of the drug, suppression is noted in 80% of cases staphylococcal flora. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is resistant.
Pharmacokinetics
Upon contact with skin, 30% is converted into iodides, and the rest into active iodine. Partially absorbed. The absorbed part penetrates tissues and organs and is selectively absorbed by the thyroid gland. Excreted by the kidneys (mainly), intestines, sweat glands, and in breast milk during breastfeeding.

Special instructions

Light and temperatures above 40 °C accelerate the breakdown of active iodine.
The drug should have a dark brown color. Discoloration of the solution indicates the destruction of the complex with the transition of active iodine to iodide ion and a decrease in the effectiveness of the drug.
An alkaline or acidic environment, the presence of fat, pus, and blood weakens the antiseptic activity.

Impact on the ability to drive vehicles and machinery
The use of the drug according to the instructions for medical use does not have a negative impact on the performance of potentially hazardous activities that require special attention and speed of reactions. Avoid contact with eyes.

Hypersensitivity, thyrotoxicosis, dermatitis herpetiformis.

Side Effects

Skin irritation, allergic reactions (itching), with prolonged use on large wound surfaces – iodism (rhinitis, urticaria, Quincke’s edema, increased salivation, lacrimation, acne). If you experience side effects listed in the instructions or they get worse, or you notice any other side effects not listed in the instructions, tell your doctor.

Interaction

Pharmaceutically incompatible with essential oils, ammonia solutions, white sedimentary mercury (mercury amide chloride) – an explosive mixture is formed.

Overdose

In case of overdose, phenomena of iodism, irritation, and burns are possible.
Treatment is symptomatic, wash off excess drug with clean running water.

Storage conditions

Store at a temperature not exceeding 25 ºС in the original packaging (bottles in cardboard packs).
Keep out of the reach of children.

Shelf life

3 years. Do not use after expiration date.
