Being an osmotically active compound, it increases osmotic pressure. After oral administration due to dehydrating effect it lowers intracranial pressure and intraocular pressure. When used rectally it has a mild irritating effect on the mucous membrane of the rectum and stimulates reflexively the contractility of the intestine, having a laxative effect, helps soften the feces and their passage through the large intestine. It has a soothing and dermatoprotective effect, has high hygroscopic and lubricating properties. When applied to the skin it activates its metabolic processes.
