A broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent belonging to the group of nitrofurans. Resistance to furazidine develops slowly and does not reach a high degree. It is active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative microbes, pathogenic strains of Staphylococcus spp. and other microorganisms resistant to antibiotics.
It is effective against Gram-positive cocci (streptococci, staphylococci), Gram-negative bacilli (Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Protea, Klebsiella, Enterobacteriaceae), protozoa (giardia). Furazidine is more active against staphylococci, Escherichia coli, Aerobacter aerogenes, Bacterium citrovorum, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus morganii compared to other nitrufurans. Furazidine shows higher activity against Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus spp. compared to other groups of antimicrobials.
Against most bacteria the bacteriostatic concentration is 1:100000 to 1:200000. The bactericidal concentration is about twice as high. Under the influence of nitrofurans in microorganisms, the respiratory chain and the tricarboxylic acid cycle (Krebs cycle) are suppressed, as well as inhibition of other biochemical processes of microorganisms, resulting in destruction of their shell or cytoplasmic membrane.
As a result of the action of nitrofurans, microorganisms release fewer toxins, so that improvement of the general state is possible even before a pronounced suppression of microflora growth. Nitrofurans, unlike many other antimicrobial agents, not only do not suppress the immune system of the body, but on the contrary, they activate it (increase complement titre and the ability of leukocytes to phagocytize microorganisms). In therapeutic doses nitrofurans stimulate leukopoiesis.
Indications
Urogenital infections (acute cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis); gynecological infections; skin and soft tissue infections; severe infected burns; for preventive purposes during urological operations (including cystoscopy, catheterization).
Active ingredient
Composition
1 capsule contains:
the active ingredient:
furazidine sodium 62.5 mg (in terms of anhydrous 100% substance – 50 mg);
excipients:
Magnesium carbonate basic aqueous 72.0 mg,
Corn starch over gelatinized 45.2 mg,
Colloidal silica (aerosil) 6.3 mg,
sodium croscarmellose 12.0 mg,
talc 2.0 mg;
solid gelatin capsules:
capsule body and cap – titanium dioxide 1.3333%,
quinoline yellow dye 0.9197%,
sunset yellow dye 0.0044%,
gelatin – up to 100%.
How to take, the dosage
Ingestion, after meals, with plenty of fluids.
In urogenital infections (acute cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis), gynecological infections:
Adults are prescribed 50-100 mg 3 times a day.
Children are prescribed 25-50 mg 3 times a day (but no more than 5 mg/kg body weight per day).
The course of treatment is 7-10 days. If it is necessary to repeat the course of treatment, a break should be taken for 10-15 days.
To prevent infection during urologic operations, cystoscopy, catheterization:
Adults are prescribed 50 mg once 30 minutes before the procedure.
In children, 25 mg once 30 minutes before the procedure.
If you forget to take the next dose, take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
Interaction
When combining furazidine with ristomycin, chloramphenicol, sulfonamides the risk of suppression of hematopoiesis increases (should not be used simultaneously).
It is not recommended that drugs that can acidify the urine (including ascorbic acid, calcium chloride) be used simultaneously with nitrofurans.
Special Instructions
To reduce the likelihood of side effects, the drug should be taken with plenty of fluid.
The drug should be discontinued if side effects occur (toxic effects are more common in patients with reduced renal excretory function).
If any of the side effects listed in the instructions worsen, or if any other side effects not listed in the instructions are noted, you should tell your doctor immediately.
Given the possible side effects of furazidine on the nervous system, caution should be exercised when driving vehicles and engaging in other potentially dangerous activities that require increased concentration and rapid psychomotor reactions.
Contraindications
Heavy chronic renal failure; pregnancy; lactation (breastfeeding); children under 3 years of age; hypersensitivity to furazidine and other nitrofurans.
Side effects
The digestive system: rarely – nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, liver function disorders.
CNS and peripheral nervous system disorders: rarely – headache, dizziness, polyneuritis.
Allergic reactions: rare – skin rash (including papular rash).
Overdose
Symptoms: neurotoxic symptoms, ataxia, tremor.
Treatment: in case of overdose drink plenty of fluids. To relieve acute symptoms use antihistamines. For prevention of neuritis it is possible to prescribe vitamins (thiamine bromide).
