Mucolytic agent, liquefies sputum, increases its volume, facilitates excretion, promotes expectoration.
The action is associated with the ability of free sulfhydryl groups of acetylcysteine to break intra- and intermolecular disulfide bonds of acidic mucopolysaccharides of sputum, which leads to depolymerization of mucoproteins and reduction of mucus viscosity (in some cases this leads to a significant increase in sputum volume, requiring aspiration of bronchial contents).
Contains activity with purulent sputum. Does not affect the body’s defenses. Increases the secretion of less viscous sialomucin by bocalytic cells, reduces the adhesion of bacteria on the epithelial cells of the bronchial mucosa. Stimulates bronchial mucosa cells, the secretion of which lyses fibrin.
It has the same effect on the secretion formed in inflammatory diseases of ENT organs.
It has an antioxidant effect due to the presence of SH-group capable of neutralizing electrophilic oxidizing toxins. It prevents alpha1-antitrypsin (elastase inhibitor) from inactivating influence of HOCl – an oxidizing agent, produced by active phagocyte myeloperoxidase.
It also has anti-inflammatory action (by inhibiting the formation of free radicals and active oxygen-containing substances responsible for the development of inflammation in lung tissue).
Indications
Active ingredient
Composition
1 tablet contains:
The active ingredient:
acetylcysteine 600 mg;
Associates:
citric acid;
sodium bicarbonate;
aspartame;
lemon flavoring.
How to take, the dosage
1 tablet is dissolved in 1/3 cup of water and taken once a day.
The duration of treatment should be assessed individually.
In acute diseases the duration of treatment is from 5 to 10 days and up to several months in the treatment of chronic diseases (according to the doctor’s recommendation).
Interaction
Combined use of acetylcysteine with cough suppressants may increase sputum stasis due to suppression of the cough reflex.
In concomitant use with such antibiotics as tetracyclines (excluding doxycycline), ampicillin, amphotericin B, they may interact with the thiol group of acetylcysteine, which leads to decreased activity of both drugs. Therefore, the interval between the intake of these drugs should be at least 2 h.
The simultaneous use of acetylcysteine and nitroglycerin may increase the vasodilator and antiplatelet effect of the latter.
Acetylcysteine eliminates the toxic effects of paracetamol.
Special Instructions
The drug contains aspartame, so it is not recommended to prescribe it to patients with phenylketonuria (granules, effervescent tablets).
Contraindications
Side effects
When taken orally in rare cases nausea, heartburn, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rash, itching, urticaria, nasal bleeding, tinnitus may occur.
In cases of bronchospasm, collapse, stomatitis, decreased platelet aggregation have been described.
Pregnancy use
Pregnant and breastfeeding use is possible only if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or baby.
