Corvaldine is a combination drug, the effect of which is due to the properties of its constituent substances.
Ethyl ester of alpha-bromisovaleric acid has sedative (similar to the effect of valerian) and antispasmodic action, caused mainly by irritation of the receptors in the mouth and nasopharynx, Decrease of reflex excitability in central parts of nervous system and increased inhibition in cortical and subcortical neurons of the brain, as well as decreased activity of central vasomotor centers and direct local antispasmodic action on smooth muscles.
Phenobarbital increases the sedative effect of the other components, helps to reduce central nervous system (CNS) excitation and facilitates the onset
Pearmint oil has a reflex vasodilatory, antispasmodic, mild choleretic, antiseptic action. The mechanism of action is associated with the ability to irritate the “cold” receptors of the mucous membrane of the mouth and expand reflexively, mainly the blood vessels of the heart and brain. It eliminates the phenomena of flatulence due to irritation of mucosal receptors of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), increasing intestinal peristalsis.
Hops oil has reflexive vasodilator and antispasmodic effect, has a sedative effect.
Indications
Active ingredient
Composition
1 ml of the drops contain
the active ingredients: ethyl bromisovalerianate (ethyl ester of a-bromisovaleric acid) 20 mg in terms of 100% substance, phenobarbital 18 mg, peppermint leaf oil (peppermint oil) 1.4 mg, hop oil (hop oil) 0.2 mg;
excipients: rectified ethyl alcohol (ethanol (96%)) – Ethanol (96%) 0.62 ml (corresponding to anhydrous ethanol – 470.8 mg (0.597 ml)), stabilizer (sodium isovalerianate) – 0.2 mg in terms of dry substance, purified water up to 1 ml.
How to take, the dosage
It is taken orally, before meals, with small amounts of liquid. Doses of the drug are established individually. In adults the usual dose is 15-20 drops 3 times a day.
In case of difficulty in falling asleep the dose may be increased up to 30 drops.
Children from 3 years of age should take 1 drop per year of child’s life once a day. The need for repeated doses is determined by the doctor depending on the clinical picture of the disease.
The duration of use of the drug is determined by the doctor individually.
Interaction
Drugs depressing CNS (including sedatives, neuroleptics, tranquilizers) increase the effect of the drug. CNS stimulants weaken the effect of the drug. Phenobarbital (microsomal oxidation inducer) may decrease the effectiveness of drugs metabolized in the liver (including coumarin derivatives, griseofulvin, glucocorticoids, oral contraceptives), increases the effect of local anesthetic, analgesic and hypnotic drugs. Concomitant use with valproic acid increases the effect of valproic acid. Concomitant use with methotrexate increases the toxicity of the latter.
Special Instructions
Contemporaneous use of alcohol should be avoided. Ethyl alcohol increases the effect of the drug and may increase its toxicity. A single dose of the drug (15-20 drops) contains 0.27-0.36 g of absolute ethyl alcohol, in the maximum daily dose (90 drops) – 1.62 g of absolute ethyl alcohol.
Potentially affecting the reaction rate when driving vehicles and other mechanisms.
The drug contains 62 vol.% of ethyl alcohol and phenobarbital, therefore, when using the drug, you should refrain from engaging in potentially hazardous activities requiring increased concentration and quick psychomotor reactions (including driving vehicles and operating moving machinery).
Contraindications
With caution – children over 3 years.
Side effects
Corvaldine is generally well tolerated, even with long-term use.
– Digestive tract disorders: feeling of heaviness or congestion, nausea;
– nervous system disorders: drowsiness, dizziness, decreased concentration;
– Immune system: allergic reactions;
– Cardiovascular system: slowed heart rate.
These effects can be eliminated by lowering the dose.
In prolonged use there may be symptoms of bromism, addiction, drug dependence and withdrawal syndrome.
Overdose
Symptoms: CNS depression, nystagmus, ataxia, decreased blood pressure, agitation, chronic bromine intoxication (depression, apathy, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, hemorrhagic diathesis, movement coordination disorders).
Treatment:symptomatic, with CNS depression – caffeine, nikethamide.
Pregnancy use
It is not recommended to use the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If it is necessary to use the drug during breastfeeding, the question of stopping breastfeeding should be considered.
