When taken orally it is broken down by lipase in the small intestine to form ricinoleic acid, which irritates intestinal receptors throughout the intestine and stimulates peristalsis reflexively. The laxative effect usually comes after 5-6 hours. When taking castor oil there is also a reflex contraction of the uterine muscles.
