Bromhexin has expectorant, mucolytic effect due to depolymerization of protein and mucopolysaccharide fibers.
Owing to these properties, the drug changes the consistency and reduces the viscosity of sputum discharged from the bronchial tract, increases its volume and thus promotes expectoration.
Bromhexin has a weak anti-cough effect, in high doses has emetic properties.

Composition
How to take, the dosage
The tablets should be taken orally after meals with plenty of fluids.
Adults and adolescents over 14 years of age are given 1 to 2 tablets (8 to 16 mg) 3 times daily.
Children and adolescents from 6 to 14 years of age and persons weighing less than 50 kg, 1 tablet (8 mg) 3 times a day. Children under 6 years of age should take a lower dosage form.
Children under 6 years of age should take lower dosage forms of bromhexin and only with a doctor’s recommendation.
Therapeutic effect may appear on the 4th to 6th day of treatment. The course of treatment is from 4 to 28 days (determined individually depending on the indications and the course of the disease). Patients with renal insufficiency or impaired liver function have lower doses or increased interval between doses.
Interaction
Bromhexin may be prescribed concomitantly with other drugs used in the treatment of bronchopulmonary diseases.
Bromhexin is not prescribed at the same time as cough suppressants (including those containing codeine) because they may make it difficult to cough up sputum liquefied by Bromhexin.
Bromhexin promotes penetration of antibiotics (amoxicillin, erythromycin, cephalexin, oxytetracycline), sulfonamide drugs in the bronchial secretion in the first 4-5 days of antimicrobial therapy.
Bromhexin is not compatible with alkaline solutions.
Special Instructions
In case of peptic ulcer disease, as well as in case of a history of gastric bleeding, bromhexin should be used under medical supervision.
With caution, use in patients with bronchial asthma.
Bromhexin should not be used at the same time as medications containing codeine, because this makes it difficult to expectorate the liquefied sputum.
Bromhexin is used in combination products of herbal medicine with essential oils (including eucalyptus oil, anise oil, peppermint oil, menthol).

Side effects
Digestive system disorders:dyspeptic symptoms, transient increase in liver serum transaminase activity.
CNS side:headache, dizziness.
Dermatological reactions: increased sweating, skin rash.
In the respiratory system:cough, bronchospasm.
Overdose
Symptoms:nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dyspeptic disorders.
Treatment:induced vomiting, gastric lavage (in the first 1-2 h after ingestion).
