Xylazine hydrochloride, a component of Xylanit, is an antagonist of central α2-adrenoreceptors, has sedative, myorelaxative and analgesic effects, stimulates both central and peripheral alpha-receptors. When parenteral administration it causes rapid onset of dissociated anesthesia. After intramuscular or subcutaneous administration, Xylanit takes 5 to 20 minutes to take effect, after intravenous administration – 1 to 5 minutes. The duration of sedative action varies in cattle from 30 minutes to 5 hours, in horses – from 30 minutes to 1 hour, in small domestic animals – from 1 to 2 hours. Analgesic effect lasts for 45 minutes in cattle, 15 to 30 minutes in small animals, in horses the duration varies from 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the dosage and the individual sensitivity of the body. Myorelaxation effect in animals comes after 20 to 50 minutes. Xylazine hydrochloride increases the effect of tranquilizers, catalepsics and anesthetics, therefore it must be used with caution in combination with the drugs of these groups. Xylazine hydrochloride is a moderately hazardous substance according to the degree of its effect on the body of warm-blooded animals; in the recommended doses it has no local irritating and sensitizing effect.
Indications
Prescribed for therapeutic purposes for pets in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (gastroenteritis, colibacillosis enteritis, gastritis, spastic colitis, pancreatitis), as well as in intoxication and dyspeptic phenomena accompanied by vomiting, appetite disorder and defecation.
Active ingredient
Xylazine
Composition
Xylanit is a drug in the form of an injection solution containing 20 mg of xylazine hydrochloride and auxiliary components in 1 ml as an active ingredient.
How to take, the dosage
Xylanit is administered to animals intramuscularly or intravenously (slowly, within 1 – 2 minutes). In cattle, xylanit is administered intramuscularly depending on indications at a dose of 0.25 – 1.5 ml per 100 kg of animal weight, which corresponds to 0.05 – 0.3 mg of xylazine hydrochloride per 1 kg of animal weight. Depending on the applied dose of Xylazine, the animal experiences sedation and myorelaxation of varying degrees:
Dosage of xylanitis | Required effect
0.25 ml per 100 kg of animal weight | Mild sedative effect with decreased muscle tone and preservation of body position in space. Used to calm the animal.
0.5 ml per 100 kg of animal weight | Moderate sedation, with a pronounced decrease in muscle tone (the animal usually maintains an upright position) and some analgesic effect. It is used for clinical studies and minor surgical interventions (mainly in combination with local anesthesia).
1.0 ml per 100 kg of animal weight | pronounced sedation and decreased muscle tone (animal lying down), high degree of anesthesia. Used for long-term surgical interventions with the possible addition of local or general anesthesia.
1.5 ml per 100 kg of animal weight | Deep sedation, with complete reduction of muscle tone and a high degree of analgesia. Used only in adult animals after a prior starvation diet for very painful and prolonged surgeries and for childbirth. |
In small cattle, xylanit is administered intramuscularly depending on indications at a dose of 0.05 – 0.25 ml of the drug per 10 kg of animal weight, corresponding to 0.1 – 0.5 mg xylazine hydrochloride per 1 kg of animal weight. Horses are intravenously injected with the dose 7,5 – 15,0 ml per 100 kg of the animal weight, which corresponds to 0,15 – 0,3 mg of xylazine hydrochloride per 1 kg of the animal weight or 3,0 – 5,0 ml per 100 kg of the animal weight, which corresponds to 0,6 – 1,0 mg of xylazine hydrochloride per 1 kg of the animal weight slowly and intravenously depending on the indications and type of the animal higher nervous activity. Sedation usually occurs within 5 minutes after injection and lasts about 20 minutes. Easily excitable animals shall be administered the drug in maximum dose; it is not recommended to administer the drug in dorsal position of the animal. In dogs during manipulations not accompanied by painful manifestations, xylanit is administered intramuscularly in the dosage of 0.5 – 1.0 ml per 10 kg of animal weight, which corresponds to 1 – 2 mg of xylazine hydrochloride per 1 kg of animal weight. In cats – intramuscularly or subcutaneously at the rate of 0.15 ml of the drug per 1 kg of cat weight, which corresponds to 3 mg of xylazine hydrochloride per 1 kg of animal weight. In case of painful manipulations, combined use of Xylarinum with other drugs (barbiturates, analgesics or local anesthetics) is recommended. Anesthesia with barbiturates should be performed 20 minutes after the administration of Xylanit, i.e. after deep sedation has been achieved. Under these conditions, the dosage of barbiturates should be reduced by a factor of two or three. Animals should not be disturbed until the full effects of Xylanit are achieved. If the required depth of sedation is not achieved, additional injections to achieve the desired effect are not recommended. Re-injection of Xylanit at a higher dose is possible after 24 hours, after the full recovery of the animal’s physiological state. Animals should be kept under observation until their physiological state is fully recovered. When Xylanit is used in combination with cataleptic and anesthetic drugs, their dosage should be reduced by a factor of two or three from that specified in the instructions for use.
Special Instructions
Slaughter of animals for meat is allowed 5 days after the last application of Xylanit. Meat of animals slaughtered before expiry of this period may be used as feed for fur animals. Milk of milking animals may not be used for food purposes for 4 days after Xylanit application but may be used to feed animals after heat treatment.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the drug. Xylanit may not be used in females during the last third of pregnancy due to its oxytocin-like effect on the uterus, except in case of obstetrics. Do not use the drug in animals with mechanical damage to the gastrointestinal tract (obstruction of the esophagus, stomach blockage, hernia), as well as with a history of cardiac conduction disorders. Xylanit should be administered with caution to animals with lung diseases.
Side effects
Some animals may experience short-term decrease in blood pressure, pulse rate and respiratory movements after Xylanit application, these symptoms disappear spontaneously and usually do not require additional medical intervention. In case of severe respiratory failure the animal is given chest massage to restore normal breathing. In cattle, high doses of xylanit may cause hypersalivation. When cattle are operated in the lateral or dorsal position, the thorax should be supported and, if possible, the head and neck should be tilted to prevent aspiration of saliva or cicatricial fluid. Atropine sulfate is helpful in reducing increased salivation. To prevent vomiting in dogs and cats, animals should be kept on a starvation diet for 6 to 24 hours before applying xylanit. In case of overdose and respiratory arrest, cold water showers and artificial respiration are recommended for the animal. Specific antidotes of xylazine hydrochloride are alpha-adrenoceptor blockers – yohimbine, tolazoline or atipamezole, which are used in animals according to the instructions.
