Methionine is an essential amino acid that regulates the nitrogen balance in the body. It contains a mobile methyl group and is involved in methylation processes, providing the synthesis of choline, adrenaline, creatine and other biologically important compounds, the neutralization of toxic products and the formation of phospholipids. Inhibits deposition of neutral fat in the liver, has a lipotropic effect (removal of excess fat from the liver). Essential phospholipids (lecithin) belong to the class of highly specialized lipids and are esters of glycerophosphoric acid.
