Pharmacological properties

Sertaconazole is an antifungal agent derived from imidazole and benzothiophene. It has fungistatic and fungicidal effect in therapeutic doses. It is active against fungi of the genus Candida. The mechanism of action of sertaconazole is inhibition of ergosterol synthesis and increase in cell membrane permeability, which leads to lysis of the fungus cell. It also has antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus and Streptococcus).

Pharmacokinetics

There is no systemic absorption after intravaginal administration. Unchanged sertaconazole is not detected in either plasma or urine.

Indications

Topical treatment of infections of the vaginal mucosa caused by fungi of the genus Candida (Candida vulvovaginitis).

How to take, the dosage

Intravaginally, once.

Before using the drug, the external genitalia should be washed with neutral or alkaline soap.

One vaginal suppository is inserted deep into the vagina while lying on the back before sleeping.

If clinical symptoms persist, the suppository may be repeated after 7 days.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to imidazole derivatives, benzothiophene and other components of the drug.

Side effects

Rarely: burning sensation, itching in the vagina, which go away on their own during treatment and do not require withdrawal of the drug.

These side effects are classic for topical medications and reflect the effectiveness of the drug.

Possible allergic reactions.

Pregnancy use

There are no sufficient data on the use of sertaconazole during pregnancy and lactation.

However, taking into account the mode of administration of the drug (single administration) and the absence of systemic absorption of the drug after intravaginal administration, the use of sertaconazole during pregnancy and lactation is possible if the potential benefit to the mother exceeds the possible risk to the fetus or child.
