Valokordin is a combined medicine, the therapeutic effect of which is due to the pharmacological properties of its constituent components.
Phenobarbital has sedative and mild sleeping pills. It helps to decrease the excitation of the central nervous system and facilitates the onset of natural sleep.
Ethylbromisovalerianate has sedative, hypnotic and antispasmodic effects.
Indications
Active ingredient
Composition
1 ml of the drug contains:
Active ingredients:
Phenobarbital – 18.40 mg,
Ethylbromisovalerianate – 18.40 mg.
Auxiliary substances:
mint oil – 1.29 mg,
hop oil – 0.18 mg,
Ethanol 96% – 469.75 mg,
Purified water – 411.97 mg.
How to take, the dosage
Valokordin is taken orally, before meals, with small amounts of liquid. The dose is set individually.
Adults are usually prescribed 15-20 drops 3 times a day.
In case of difficulty in falling asleep the dose may be increased up to 30 drops. The duration of the drug is determined by the doctor individually.
Interaction
Simultaneous use of Valokordin with sedatives increases the effect.
Simultaneous use with neuroleptics and tranquilizers increases the effect of each component of the drug, and with central nervous system stimulants it weakens it. Alcohol increases the effects of Valokordin and may increase its toxicity.
The presence of phenobarbital in Valokordin may induce microsomal liver enzymes, and this makes it undesirable to use it simultaneously with drugs that are metabolized in the liver, because their concentration and, therefore, effectiveness will change due to more rapid metabolism (indirect anticoagulants, antibiotics, sulfonamides, etc.).
Phenobarbital attenuates the effects of coumarin derivatives, glucocorticosteroids, griseofulvin, and oral contraceptives.
Special Instructions
If it is necessary to prescribe the drug during lactation, discontinuation of breastfeeding should be considered.
The drug contains 55 vol.% ethanol (the absolute content of ethanol in a maximum single dose (30 drops) is 0.469 grams) and phenobarbital, therefore Valokordin, even when used correctly, may impair the ability of patients to respond quickly in certain situations, e.g. when standing outside or when operating machinery. This is especially pronounced when alcohol is taken at the same time.
Long-term use of the drug may lead to drug dependence; bromine may accumulate in the body and develop bromine poisoning.
Contraindications
With caution: liver disease, alcoholism, brain injury, brain disease as the drug contains ethanol.
Side effects
Valocordine is generally well tolerated, even with long-term use.
In isolated cases: somnolence and mild dizziness may occur during the daytime hours.
In prolonged use in high doses: development of chronic bromine poisoning is possible, manifestations of which are: depressed mood, apathy, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, hemorrhagic diathesis, impaired coordination of movements.
Rarely: with hypersensitivity, skin reactions may occur.
If you experience any side effects (unusual) that are not listed in the instructions, please tell your doctor.
Overdose
Symptoms: in mild and moderate intoxication drowsiness, dizziness, psychomotor disorders are observed. In severe cases – coma, decreased blood pressure, respiratory disorders, tachycardia, vascular collapse, decreased peripheral reflexes.
Treatment: flush the stomach, take activated charcoal and call a doctor immediately.
