Synopsis
Purified turpentine. An essential oil obtained by distillation of oleoresin from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), pine family (Pinaceae).
The main component of turpentine is hydrogenated hydrocarbon pinene.
A transparent colorless liquid with a characteristic odor and pungent taste. Insoluble in water, soluble in 12 parts of alcohol. It is miscible in all ratios with ether, chloroform, benzene.
It has local irritating, distracting (analgesic) and antiseptic effects.
The distracting effect is associated with the ability of turpentine (similarly to other essential oils) to penetrate the epidermis and cause reflex changes in the body due to irritation of skin receptors; release of bioactive substances from the skin, particularly histamine, also plays a certain role.

Liver and kidney diseases.
