Sulfasalazine, 500 mg 50 pcs

Sulfasalazine selectively accumulates in the intestinal connective tissue with the release of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), which has anti-inflammatory activity, and sulfapyridine, which has antimicrobial bacteriostatic activity.

Interaction

It enhances the effect of anticoagulants, antiepileptic and oral hypoglycemic drugs, as well as the side effects of cytostatics, immunosuppressants, hepato- and nephrotoxic drugs.

Concomitant use with sulfasalazine increases toxicity of azathioprine and mercaptopurine.

Concomitant use with ampicillin or rifampicin decreases release of 5-aminosalicylic acid from sulfasalazine molecule in the colon (due to suppression under the influence of ampicillin and rifampicin of activity of anaerobic bacteria which participate in this process). In this regard, the effectiveness of sulfasalazine may be reduced. The interaction of sulfasalazine with neomycin is believed to be similar.

In concomitant use with digoxin it may decrease its absorption; with thalinololol it may decrease absorption of thalinololol; with folic acid it may decrease absorption of folic acid.

Special Instructions

With caution use in patients with hepatic and/or renal dysfunction, patients with bronchial asthma, allergic reactions.

Augmented fluid intake is recommended during treatment.

Hypatic enzymes levels, general blood and urine tests should be monitored during treatment.

Side effects

Nervous system disorders: headache, dizziness, tinnitus, ataxia, seizures, sleep disorders, hallucinations, peripheral neuropathy.

Urinary system disorders: renal dysfunction, interstitial nephritis.

Digestive system disorders: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, anorexia, hepatitis, pancreatitis.

Respiratory system: interstitial pneumonitis and other pulmonary tissue lesions.

Hematopoietic system disorders: anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis.

Reproductive system: transient oligospermia, infertility.

Allergic reactions: skin rash, toxic epidermal necrolysis, erythema malignant exudative, fever, anaphylactic shock.

Others: yellowing of the skin, urine, and soft contact lenses may occur.
