Pharmacological group:
Homeopathic monocomponent drug of plant origin
Pharmacological properties:
Datura stramonium is a tall plant with dark green leaves and long white flowers. After flowering, the ovary turns into a capsule with spines, which at maturity opens with four flaps and yields numerous seeds. Chemical composition: flavonoids and hydroxycoumarins; alkaloids (hyoscyamine, atropine and scopolamine).
When used in standard therapeutic doses (5 to 10 mg/day) Datura stramonium shows m-cholinoblocker effect, has a myotropic antispasmodic effect. It has analgesic, anti-asthmatic and hypnotic effects. Scopolamine also has a sedative effect.
Indications
Key symptoms for prescribing the drug:
-almost no pain, despite the severity of symptoms, except for headache;
-very severe congestive headaches with throbbing;
-sensation of dry throat;
-extreme mental agitation;
– twitching, seizures, tics, stuttering.
Main cases of clinical application:
Infectious diseases: Severe prolonged fever accompanied by marked redness of the face, a sensation of heat throughout the body, dry skin followed by sweating that does not relieve the patient, headache, dryness and redness of the mucous membrane of the throat, nightmares and waking in a state of intense fear; febrile syndrome in children with a history of febrile seizures (standard therapy as a precautionary measure).
In pediatrics, prescribing Stramonium is often preferable to Belladonna, which has the same indications. Stramonium is used in delirium with rage affect in the following cases: alcohol delirium, mania, chore-like syndromes; acute psychosis with hallucinations of erotic character or delirium with the affect of fear.
Otolaryngology: laryngospasm.
Pulmonology: severe pertussis-like cough; bronchospasm.
