Pharmacological group:
Homeopathic monocomponent drug of plant origin
Pharmacological properties:
Datura stramonium is a tall plant with dark green leaves and long white flowers. After flowering, the ovary turns into a capsule with spines, which at maturity opens with four flaps and yields numerous seeds. Chemical composition: flavonoids and hydroxycoumarins; alkaloids (hyoscyamine, atropine and scopolamine).
When used in standard therapeutic doses (5 to 10 mg/day) Datura stramonium shows m-cholinoblocker effect, has a myotropic antispasmodic effect. It has analgesic, anti-asthmatic and hypnotic effects. Scopolamine also has a sedative effect.
Indications
Key symptoms for prescribing the drug:
– almost complete absence of pain, despite the severity of the symptoms, with the exception of headache;
-very severe congestive headaches with throbbing;
-feeling of dryness in the throat;
– extreme mental agitation;
– twitching, convulsions, tics, stuttering.
Main clinical applications:
Infectious diseases: severe prolonged fever, accompanied by severe redness of the face, a feeling of heat throughout the body, dry skin followed by sweating, which does not alleviate the patient’s condition, headache, dryness and redness of the mucous membrane of the pharynx, nightmares and awakening in a state of severe fear; febrile syndrome in children with a history of febrile seizures (standard therapy as a precaution).
In pediatrics, Stramonium is often preferred over Belladonna, which has the same indications. The main difference for the prescription of these two drugs is the characteristics of the fever and the severity of the symptoms: for Belladonna – an irregular fever with peaks, while for Stramonium – a prolonged fever and more pronounced, severe symptoms.
Behavioral disorders: insomnia with nightmares; paradoxical reactions to psychotropic drugs. Prescribing the drug Stramonium for this indication, especially for children aged 2 years, is quite effective.
Stramonium is used for delirium with the affect of rage in the following cases: alcoholic delirium, mania, choreo-like syndromes; acute psychosis with hallucinations of an erotic nature or delirium with an affect of fear.
Otolaryngology: laryngospasm.
Pulmonology: severe whooping cough; bronchospasm.
Other indications: sunstroke; strabismus.
