An antibacterial agent for topical use in ophthalmology, a sulfonamide derivative. It has a wide range of antimicrobial action. It has a bacteriostatic effect.
The mechanism of action is connected with competitive antagonism with PABA and competitive inhibition of dihydropteroatsintase which leads to disruption of tetrahydrofolic acid synthesis which is necessary for purines and pyrimidines synthesis.
Sulfacetamide is active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (including pathogenic cocci, Escherichia coli), Chlamydia spp.

How to take, the dosage
1-2 drops into the conjunctival sac 6-8 times a day (every 2-3 hours). The course of treatment is 7-10 days. The number of instillations can be reduced as the condition improves. In therapy of diseases of the organs of vision caused by Chlamydia trachomatis the dosing regimen is 1 drop every 2 hours, local application of sulfonamide should be combined with systemic therapy.
Push into the conjunctival sac 1-2 drops 5-6 times a day. For prophylaxis of blennorrhea in newborns 2 drops in each conjunctival sac immediately after birth and 2 drops after 2 hours.
