How to take, the dosage

The choice of dosage form depends primarily on the localization of intestinal lesion and its prevalence. In widespread forms of ulcerative colitis (total and subtotal), as well as in Crohn’s disease with involvement of the small intestine, tablets and pellets are used. In distal forms (proctitis, proctosigmoiditis) rectal administration of the drug in the form of suppositories, enemas or foam is preferred. In left-sided affection of the large intestine both therapy with suppositories, enemas or foams and their combination with tablets or pellets are possible.

The tablets are taken before meals with plenty of water. Pellets can be taken regardless of meals. For treatment of mild and moderate forms of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease the drug is prescribed in a dose of 1.5-3 g / day in 3 doses; in case of a severe course the daily dose can be increased up to 4-8 g (for up to 8-12 weeks).

In order to prevent relapses the drug is administered orally in a dose of 1.5 g/day (if necessary for several years), or the tablets or pellets (1 g/day) are combined with suppositories (500 mg at night).

Rectally in proctitis, proctosigmoiditis and left-sided ulcerative colitis, suppositories are used to treat exacerbations at a dose of 1.5 g/day (frequency of use is 3 times a day), enemas (4 g/60 ml or 2 g/30 ml, depending on the extent of the disease) and foam (the latter two dosage forms are usually prescribed once a day before bedtime; the bowel should be cleaned/emptied beforehand). For prevention of recurrence of ulcerative colitis limited to rectal lesions, suppositories of 250 mg 3 times a day are usually already effective.
