Xylometazoline (derivative of imidazoline) is an alpha-adrenomimetic, causes narrowing of blood vessels of nasal mucosa, eliminating its edema and hyperemia, restores nasal passageway patency, facilitates nasal breathing and improves nasal discharge in rhinitis (runny nose) of different origin.
The action of the drug starts within a few minutes after application and lasts up to 10 hours.
Indications
- median otitis (as part of combined therapy to reduce nasopharyngeal mucosal edema);
- to facilitate rhinoscopy;
- acute rhinitis (including acute respiratory disorders and allergic rhinitis;
- sinusitis;
- sinusitis;
- eustachianitis;
- preparing patients for diagnostic manipulations in the nasal passages.

How to take, the dosage
Adults and children over 6 years of age should be put 2-3 drops of 0.1% solution in each nasal passage 3-4 times a day.
Children from 2 to 6 years of age are aspirated with 0.05 % solution in each nostril 1-2 times a day. Do not use more than 3 times a day.
The duration of treatment is not more than 3-5 days (without a break).
Before using the drug, unscrew the cap of the bottle and drip into the nose by gently pressing the bottom of the bottle.
Interaction
The systemic effects may be enhanced with concomitant use of MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants.

Contraindications
- arterial hypertension;
- tachycardia;
- explicit atherosclerosis;
- glaucoma;
- atrophic rhinitis;
- hyperthyroidism;
- brain surgery (history);
- pregnancy (for nasal drops);
- children under 2 years of age;
- children under 6 years of age (for nasal drops 0.1% and 0.1% nasal spray)
- high sensitivity to the ingredients of the product (including to eucalyptus oil).
Do not use with MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants or other drugs which increase BP.
The drug should be used with caution in diabetes mellitus, CHD, functional class III-IV angina pectoris, prostatic hyperplasia, and during lactation.

Side effects
Local reactions: with frequent and/or prolonged use – irritation and/or dryness of the nasopharyngeal mucosa, burning, paresthesias, sneezing, hypersecretion; rarely – swelling of the nasal mucosa.
Systemic reactions: vomiting, headache, palpitations, increased BP, insomnia, visual impairment, depression (with prolonged use of high doses).

Overdose
Symptoms: worsening of side effects.
Treatment: symptomatic under medical supervision.
