Pharmacological effect:

Xylometazoline is an alpha-adrenomimetic used for topical use in ENT practice.

When used topically, xylometazoline causes narrowing of arterioles resulting in decreased hyperemia and edema of nasopharyngeal mucous membranes and decreased secretion. A clear local effect of the drug is revealed in a few minutes and lasts for several hours (up to 6 – 8 hours), manifested in the restoration of patency of nasal passages, sinus holes and Eustachian tubes. Restoration of nasopharyngeal air patency improves the patients’ well-being and reduces the risk of possible complications caused by mucociliary congestion.

Pharmacokinetics:

When administered topically, xylometazoline is virtually not absorbed, so plasma concentrations are very low (not analytically detectable).

Composition

1 dose of the drug contains acting substance: xylometazoline hydrochloride 0.035 mg; excipients: benzalkonium chloride (as a 50% solution) 0.028 mg in terms of benzalkonium chloride 0.014 mg, citric acid monohydrate 0.035 mg, sodium citrate dihydrate 0.182 mg, glycerol 85 % 1.680 mg, purified water to 68.390 mg.

Contraindications

– hypersensitivity to xylometazoline or other components of the drug;

– inflammation of the skin, nasal mucosa and crust formation (dry rhinitis);

– use after pituitaryectomy;

– use in children under 2 years of age;

– closed angle glaucoma;

– taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and tricyclic antidepressants.

With caution:

Perhaps use with caution in patients with arterial hypertension, severe heart disease, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, and long QT interval syndrome.

Side effects

A sensation of burning and dryness of the nasal mucosa;

in rare cases – irritation of the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth and throat, headache and nausea;

Extremely rare (< 1/10000) – arrhythmia, increased blood pressure, increased excitability, skin reactions.
