Restasis eye drops are used to reduce the symptoms of dry eyes. The main active ingredient of the drug, cyclosporine has an immunosuppressive effect when administered systemically.

In reducing tear production in patients with dry caratoconjunctivitis, locally administered cyclosporine has immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects.

Pharmacokinetics

The concentration of cyclosporine after topical administration in adults at a concentration of 0.05% twice daily is below the detectable value of 0.1 ng/ml.

Indications

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (decreased tear production).

Pharmacological effect

With a decrease in tear production in patients with dry caratoconjunctivitis, topically applied cyclosporine has an immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effect.

Special instructions

The emulsion contained in one bottle for individual use should be used immediately after opening the bottle – the remaining amount of the drug after instillation must be disposed of immediately after use.

Do not allow the tip of the bottle to touch your eyes or any surface to avoid the possibility of infection of its contents.

Restasis should not be used when wearing contact lenses. Contact lens use is generally not recommended for patients with decreased tear production. If lenses are still used, they must be removed before using the drug and can be reinstalled 15 minutes after using the drug Restasis.

Impact on the ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery

Restasis has a minor effect on the ability to drive vehicles and machines.

If the patient’s visual acuity temporarily decreases after using the drug, it is not recommended to drive a car or engage in activities that require increased attention until it is restored.

Composition

Active ingredient:

cyclosporine – 0.5 mg;

Auxiliary components:

castor oil 12.5 mg,

glycerol – 22.0 mg,

polysorbate 80 -10.0 mg,

carbomer – 0.5 mg,

sodium hydroxide – 4.09 mg,

water.

Pregnancy

There have been no adequate and strictly controlled studies of Restasis in pregnant women. Restasis is not recommended for pregnant women.

When administered systemically, cyclosporine passes into breast milk; excretion into breast milk when administered topically has not been studied. When prescribed during lactation, breastfeeding should be discontinued.

Use in children

Contraindicated in children under 18 years of age.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity.
Acute eye infections.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding.
Childhood.

Restasis should be prescribed with caution to patients with herpetic keratitis (currently or with a history of this disease).

Side Effects

Very common: burning sensation in the eye.

Common: eye irritation, conjunctival hyperemia, foreign body sensation in the eyes, pain or itching, eye discharge, blurred vision, photophobia, headache, dry eye syndrome.

Rarely: keratitis with ulceration, hyperemia and swelling of the eyelids, increased lacrimation, nausea, dizziness, rash.

Sometimes: swelling of the eyelids and conjunctiva, urticaria, hypersensitivity reactions.

Overdose

No cases of overdose of Restasis have been reported.

When the drug is applied topically in the form of eye drops, due to the low concentration of cyclosporine, an overdose is unlikely.
