Restasis eye drops are used to reduce the symptoms of dry eyes. The main active ingredient of the drug, cyclosporine has an immunosuppressive effect when administered systemically.
In reducing tear production in patients with dry caratoconjunctivitis, locally administered cyclosporine has immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects.
Pharmacokinetics
The concentration of cyclosporine after topical administration in adults at a concentration of 0.05% twice daily is below the detectable value of 0.1 ng/ml.
Indications
Dry keratoconjunctivitis (decreased tear production).
Active ingredient
Composition
Active active ingredient:
Cyclosporine – 0.5mg;
Auxiliary Components:
Castor oil 12.5mg,
Glycerol – 22.0mg,
polysorbate 80 -10.0mg,
carbomer – 0.5mg,
sodium hydroxide – 4.09mg,
water.
How to take, the dosage
It is used topically. Before use, turn the bottle upside down and shake several times to obtain a homogeneous emulsion.
Push one drop into the conjunctival sac twice daily; the recommended interval between doses is 12 hours.
Special Instructions
The emulsion contained in a single individual use bottle must be used immediately after opening the bottle – the remaining amount of product after injection must be disposed of immediately after use.
Please do not allow the tip of the vial to touch your eyes or any surface to avoid the possibility of infection of the contents.
Please do not use Restasis while wearing contact lenses. Patients with decreased tear production are generally not recommended to use contact lenses. If lenses are still used, they should be removed prior to application and may be reinserted 15 min after use of Restasis.
Influence on driving and operating ability
Restasis has negligible effect on the ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery.
If the patient’s visual acuity temporarily decreases after using the drug, it is not recommended to drive vehicles and engage in activities requiring increased attention until it is restored.
Contraindications
Restasis should be administered with caution in patients with herpetic keratitis (current or with a history of this disease).
Side effects
Very common: Burning sensation in the eye.
Often: eye irritation, conjunctival hyperemia, foreign body sensation in the eye, pain or itching, eye discharge, blurred vision, photophobia, headache, “dry eye” syndrome.
Rarely: keratitis with ulceration, eyelid hyperemia and edema, increased lacrimation, nausea, dizziness, rash.
Sometimes: edema of the eyelids and conjunctiva, urticaria, hypersensitivity reactions.
Overdose
No cases of overdose of Restasis have been reported.
In topical application of the drug in the form of eye drops due to the low concentration of cyclosporine overdose is unlikely.
Pregnancy use
There are no adequate and strictly controlled studies of Restasis in pregnant women. Restasis is not recommended for use in pregnant women.
Cyclosporine penetrates into breast milk when administered systemically; excretion with breast milk when administered topically has not been studied. Breastfeeding should be discontinued when administered during lactation.
Preventive use in children
Controlled in children under 18 years of age.
