The rauwolfia alkaloids have hypotensive and antiarrhythmic effects.

The sedative effect is less pronounced than that of reserpine, but the hypotensive effect is almost equal to that of reserpine, and in some cases is better tolerated.

The hypotensive effect of Raunatin develops more slowly than that of reserpine.

Indications

Mild to moderate arterial hypertension.

How to take, the dosage

Raunatin is taken orally, after meals. On day 1 take 1 tablet (2 mg – in terms of the amount of alkaloids) at night; on day 2 – 1 tablet 2 times a day, on day 3 – 3 tablets, gradually increasing the total dose to 4-6 tablets a day.

After a therapeutic effect has been achieved (after 10-14 days) the dose is gradually reduced to 1-2 tablets daily.

Interaction

With caution, co-administer with quinidine, guanethidine, cardiac glycosides, beta-adrenoblockers (risk of increased negative chrono- and dromotropic effects).

Special Instructions

The simultaneous or sequential use with other hypotensive agents (ganglionic blockers, hydrochlorothiazide, hydralazine) is possible.

Contraindications

• arterial hypotension;
• depression;
• coronary insufficiency;
• organic myocardial lesions;
• aortic defects;
• gastric and duodenal ulcer;
• nephrosclerosis;
• pregnancy (third trimester);
• age under 18 years old;
• high sensitivity to rauwolfia alkaloids.

Side effects

Nasal mucosal swelling, increased sweating, asthenia, cardialgia, bradycardia, depression, decreased libido are possible.

Pregnancy use

It is contraindicated in pregnancy (III trimester), during lactation.
