Pyridoxine is a substitute for vitamin B6 deficiency. It is phosphorylated and in the form of pyridoxal phosphate is part of the enzymes that catalyze decarboxylation and reamination.

It plays an important role in the metabolism of tryptophan, glutamic acid, cysteine, methionine and in the transport of amino acids across the cell membrane. It is necessary for the activation of phosphorylase, for the formation of neurotransmitters, gamma-aminobutyric acid, glycine and serotonin.

Participates in the metabolism of vitamin B12, folic acid, in the synthesis of porphyrins, in the metabolism of unsaturated fatty acids. It is used to activate metabolic processes in myofibrils, especially in myocardial hypoxia.

The daily requirement for adults is 2-2.5 mg, for children from 6 months to 1 year – 0.5 mg, 1-1.5 years – 0.9 mg, 1.5-2 years – 1 mg, 3-4 years – 1.3 mg, 5-6 years – 1.4 mg, 7-10 years – 1.7 mg, 11-13 years – 2 mg, for boys 14-17 years – 2.2 mg, for girls 14-17 years – 1.9 mg.

The physiological function of vitamins B1 and B6 is potentiation of each other’s action, manifested in a positive effect on the nervous, muscular and cardiovascular systems.

Concomitant use with hormonal contraceptives may increase the concentration of pyridoxine in the blood plasma. Concomitant use potentiates the effect of diuretics. Concomitant use with levodopa decreases or completely inhibits the effects of levodopa.

Concomitant use with isonicotinhydrazide, penicillamine, cycloserine may reduce the effectiveness of pyridoxine. Concomitant use with phenytoin, phenobarbital may decrease the plasma concentrations of phenytoin and phenobarbital.

Special Instructions

With caution is used in gastric and duodenal ulcer, CHD.

In severe liver damage pyridoxine in high doses may cause deterioration of liver function.
