Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Once in the body silver proteinate dissociates to form silver ions, which have astringent, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effect. Silver ions actively inhibit the reproduction of infectious agents by binding their DNA. The mechanism of action of protargol is based on the fact that silver ions precipitate proteins on damaged mucosa and form a protective film. This reduces sensitivity, narrows the blood vessels (this leads to reduction of edema) and suppresses the inflammatory process. Silver ions also inhibit the reproduction of various bacteria. It is active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria: B.cereus, C.albicans, E.coli, P.aeruginosa. C.aureus, A.niger, S.abony etc.
Pharmacokinetics
When applied topically it is practically not absorbed.

Indications

Symptomatic therapy for acute nasopharyngitis (runny nose), sinusitis.

Composition

Ingredients per tablet:

Active ingredient: silver proteinate (protargol) – 200.0 mg.

Excipient: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose – 10.0 mg.

How to take, the dosage

Topically as a 2% solution.

How to prepare 2% solution:

1. Put one tablet of Protargol-LOR into the bottle from dark glass.

2. Pour 10 ml (up to the level of “shoulders” – the narrowing of the bottle) of boiled water (pre-cooled to room temperature) or water for injection into the bottle.

3. close the bottle with the eyedropper and shake it vigorously for 5 minutes, then leave it for 10 minutes and then again shake it vigorously for 5 minutes. The tablet should dissolve completely.

Store the prepared solution not more than 30 days in the light-protected place at the temperature not more than 25 °С.

Before the use of Protargol-LOR it is recommended to wash and clean the nasal passages.

Adults and children over 6 years old – 2-3 drops in each nostril three times a day.

Children aged 3-6 years old: 1-2 drops in each nostril three times a day for 5-7 days. The main effect of the drug will be revealed only after 2-3 days after the first use.

If the symptoms persist or worsen for more than 5-7 days it is recommended to consult a physician. Use the drug only according to the method of use and in the doses specified in the instructions for use.

Interaction

Pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetic interaction: not studied. Pharmaceutical interaction: salts of zinc, copper, lead, silver, mercury, iron, aluminum form insoluble precipitates with silver proteinate solution; silver proteinate solution is inactivated by alkaloid salts and organic bases (epinephrine).

Special Instructions

The nasal discharge may turn gray or blue.

Effect of the drug on the ability to drive vehicles and mechanisms

The drug does not affect the ability to drive vehicles or engage in other potentially dangerous activities that require increased concentration and rapid psychomotor reactions.

Round flat-cylindrical tablets from brown to dark brown or almost black with a bluish tint, with an irregular surface, beveled and ribbed

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the drug components, atrophic rhinitis, pregnancy, breastfeeding, children under 3 years of age (for this dosage).

Side effects

– allergic reactions: skin itching, mucosal irritation, urticaria;

– burning and numbness;

– dry mouth;

– red eyes;

– anaphylactic shock;

– Quincke’s edema;

– atopic dermatitis.

Overdose

Symptoms: overdose is unlikely with the recommended route of administration. Increased side effects are possible. Irritation of the gastrointestinal tract may occur if a large amount of the drug is accidentally swallowed. Long uncontrolled use of the drug may theoretically cause a very rare disease – argyrosis (staining of the skin and mucosa in gray or bluish color). The risk of argyrosis is unlikely if the recommended dosage regimen is followed.

Treatment: In case of intense irritation, burning, itching of the eyes, flush the skin, mucous membranes with plenty of water for 15 minutes. Treatment is symptomatic.

Pregnancy use

The drug is contraindicated in pregnancy and during breast-feeding
