Progesterone is a gestagen. Hormone of the corpus luteum. Causes the uterine mucosa to transition from the proliferation phase caused by follicular hormone to the secretory phase and, after fertilization, promotes its transition to the state necessary for the development of the fertilized egg.
It reduces the excitability and contractility of the uterine muscles and fallopian tubes and stimulates the development of mammary gland terminal elements. It has no androgenic activity. Progesterone has a weak effect on protein metabolism, promotes fat deposition and glucose accumulation in the liver, and decreases sodium reabsorption in the renal tubules.
Progesterone has a blocking effect on the secretion of hypothalamic release factors LH and FSH, inhibits the formation of gonadotropic hormones in the pituitary gland and inhibits ovulation.
Pharmacokinetics
After injection, it is absorbed rapidly and almost completely. Metabolized in the liver, most metabolites form conjugates with glucuronic and sulfuric acids.
The T1/2 from plasma is a few minutes. It is excreted with the urine – 50-60% and with the feces – more than 10%. The amount of metabolites that are excreted in the urine varies depending on the phase of the corpus luteum.
