Pharmgroup:
an antiseptic agent.
Pharmic action:
Iodine in the form of polyvinylpyrrolidone iodine complex. The concentration of active iodine is 0.1-1%.
It has antiseptic, disinfectant, antifungal and antiprotozoal effects. It blocks amino groups of cellular proteins. It also has a broad spectrum of antimicrobial action.
It is active against bacteria (including E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus), fungi, viruses and protozoa.
Polyvinylpyrrolidone iodine refers to iodophores that bind iodine. On contact with skin and mucous membranes, iodine is released gradually and evenly, having a bactericidal effect on microorganisms.
A thin colored layer remains at the place of application, which lasts until all the iodine is released.
Indications
Povidon iodine solution for external use of 10%:
– treatment and prevention of wound infections in surgery, traumatology, combustiology, dentistry;
– treatment of bacterial, fungal and viral skin infections, prevention of superinfection in dermatological practice;
– treatment of bedsores, trophic ulcers, diabetic foot;
– disinfection of skin and mucous membranes of patients in preparation for surgical operations, invasive tests (punctures, biopsies, injections etc.).
– skin disinfection around catheters, drains, probes;
– disinfection of oral cavity during dental surgeries;
– disinfection of birth-pipes during “small” gynecological operations (artificial interruption of pregnancy, insertion of uterine coils, coagulation of erosions and polyps and etc.).

How to take, the dosage
– For treatment of skin and mucous membranes it is used undiluted for lubrication, irrigation or as a wet compress.
– For use in drainage systems the solution is diluted 10 to 100 times.
Interaction
Incompatible with other disinfectants and antiseptics, especially those containing alkalis, enzymes and mercury. The activity is reduced in an acidic environment.
Contraindications
hypersensitivity;
thyroid adenoma;
hyperthyroidism;
dermatitis herpetiformis of Duhring’s disease;
CPP;
concomitant use of radioactive iodine;
pregnancy;
breastfeeding;
childhood (under 8 years).
Side effects
When used on a large wound surface and mucous membranes systemic absorption of iodine may occur, which may affect tests of thyroid functional activity, as well as lead to the development of neutropenia.
In individual cases of hypersensitivity to the drug, local manifestation of allergic reactions to iodine (hyperemia, burning, itching, swelling, pain) may occur, requiring withdrawal of the drug.
Overdose
Symptoms: local irritation, allergic reactions.
Treatment: reduce the frequency of use or stop using the drug completely.
