Description

Potassium orotate has an anabolic and regenerating effect.

It is one of the precursors of pyrimidine nucleotides (uracil, thymine, cytosine), which are components of nucleic acids that participate in the synthesis of proteins.

It is used as a regenerant in disorders of protein metabolism and as a stimulant of metabolic processes.

It enhances reparative and regenerative processes in tissues, increases formation of albumin in the liver, especially in conditions of prolonged hypoxia in some diseases, such as in heart failure.

Potassium orotate is involved in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. The participation of orotic acid in carbohydrate metabolism is its effect on the metabolism of galactose.

Potassium orotate helps to increase diuresis (has diuretic effect).

Enhances appetite. Improves tolerance of cardiac glycosides.

Indications

Potassium orotate is used in complex therapy in combination with other drugs (vitamins, cardiotonic drugs, etc.).):
– Liver and biliary tract diseases as a result of acute or chronic intoxications (except for liver cirrhosis with ascites);
– Myocardial dystrophy (myocardiodystrophy), myocardial infarction and chronic heart failure stage II and III (combined therapy);
– Hypotrophy, dystrophy in children (alimentary and alimentary-infectious);
– Anemia;
– Anemia – Anemia;
– progressive muscular dystrophy;
– period of convalescence after diseases;

Potassium orotate is administered orally (1 hour before a meal or 4 hours after a meal). Dose of Potassium orotate for adults is from 0.5 to 1.5 g per day in 2-3 sittings (250-500 mg 2-3 times a day).
The course of treatment is 20-40 days (in some cases longer). If necessary, after a one-month break the course of treatment is repeated.
In separate cases depending on the efficiency and tolerability the daily dose of Potassium orotate for adults is increased up to 3 g.
In children (in cases of alimentary and alimentary-infectious hypotrophy, anemia, during convalescence after disease states etc.) Potassium orotate is administered at the rate of 10-20 mg per 1 kg of body weight during 2-3 times a day.
The course of treatment is 3-5 weeks. If necessary the treatment course is repeated after a one-month break.

Potassium orotate slightly reduces toxicity and improves tolerability of cardiac glycosides (digoxin, celanide, etc.).
Binders and coagulants (de-nol, sucralfate, algeldrate and magnesium hydroxide, etc.) may slightly reduce absorption of Potassium orotate in the gastrointestinal tract.
The effectiveness of Potassium orotate is increased when folic acid and cyanocobalamin are administered together.

The combination of orotic acid and magnesium (magnesium orotate) is promising for use in cardiology practice.
Potassium orotate cannot be used as a potassium-containing drug for potassium replacement therapy.

In some cases, allergic reactions (dermatosis) are observed that quickly disappear after discontinuation of Potassium orotate.

Potassium orotate in high doses may cause liver dystrophy in low-protein diet.
