Pirantel, tablets 250 mg 3 pcs

Pirantel is an anthelmintic.

Blocks neuromuscular transmission in susceptible helminthes.

Pharmacodynamics

Acts on helminths in the early phase of development and mature forms, has no effect on larvae in the migration stage. It is active against Enterobius vermicularis, Ascaris lumbricoides, Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus, Trichostrongylus orientalis, Trichostrongylus colubriformis.

Pharmacokinetics

It is practically not absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. After oral administration at a single dose of 10 mg/kg body weight, Cmax is 0.005-0.13 µg/ml and is reached within 1-3 hours. Partially metabolized in the liver to N-methyl-1,3-propanediamine. It is excreted in the faeces (50% of the dose taken – unchanged) and in the urine (about 7% – unchanged and as a metabolite).

Enterobiasis, ascariasis, ankylostomidosis, necatoriasis.

Composition

Active substance:

pyrantel pamoate equivalent to pyrantel base 250 mg;

Auxiliary substances:

corn starch,

gelatin,

purified talc,

Magnesium stearate,

sodium carboxymethyl starch.

How to take, the dosage

The drug is administered orally during or after meals and the dosage is set individually depending on the age and body weight of the patient.
Ascariasis and enterobiasis, as well as mixed infestations – once at a dose of 10 mg/kg body weight.

Children 3 years – 6 years – 250 mg (1 tablet)

Children 6 years – 12 years – 500 mg (2 tablets)

Children over 12 years and adults weighing less than 75 kg – 750 mg (3 tablets)

Children over 12 years and adults weighing less than 75 kg – 750 mg (3 tablets)/p>

Adults over 75 kg – 1000 mg (4 tablets)

The tablet should be chewed thoroughly.
Ankylostomiasis: the drug is prescribed at the rate of 10 mg/kg body weight per day for 3 days.
Necatoriasis: in severe forms the drug is prescribed at the rate of 20 mg/kg body weight per day for 2 days.

Interaction

Should not be administered simultaneously with piperazine (weakening of action).
With simultaneous use pirantel increases the concentration of theophylline in plasma.

Special Instructions

No laxatives are prescribed after pyrantel administration.

In case of enterobiasis all persons living together should be treated at the same time. After completion of treatment it is necessary to conduct a control examination of feces for the presence of parasite eggs.

Careful hygiene (cleaning of living rooms and cleaning of clothing to destroy the helminth eggs serves as a prevention of reinfection).

Side effects

Nervous system and sensory organs: rarely – headache, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, weakness; in some cases – hearing impairment, hallucinations, confusion, paresthesias.

Gastrointestinal system disorders: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain; rarely – increased liver transaminase activity.

Other: skin rash, fever.

Pregnancy use

Pregnancy and breast-feeding can be used only under the strict supervision of a doctor.
