ATC code: [ A11AA03]
Pharmacological properties
PIKOVIT® D contains the 10 most important vitamins as well as calcium and phosphorus.
The B vitamins (B1, B2, B6, B12), pantothenic acid, and nicotinamide are involved in metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Folic acid is inactive, but in the body it is converted into a biologically active coenzyme – tetrahydrofolic acid, which is necessary for the biosynthesis of nucleic acids.
It enhances growth and is involved in the maturation of red blood cells. Folic acid is involved in the formation and regeneration of platelets and their function.
Vitamin A is necessary for the development of epithelial cells and the synthesis of visual pigment. Vitamin D is involved in calcium metabolism and promotes proper mineralization of bones and teeth. Vitamin C accelerates the absorption of iron and is involved in many redox processes in the body.
Calcium and phosphorus play a key role in the mineralization of bones and teeth. Calcium ions activate numerous enzymes, they participate in regulating the tone of the heart muscle, in the transmission of nerve impulses and regulate the permeability of cell membranes.
The water-soluble vitamins (B vitamins, vitamin C and biotin) are well absorbed in amounts corresponding to the daily requirements of the body. Quantities exceeding tissue saturation are eliminated by the kidneys and, to a lesser extent, through the gastrointestinal tract.
Fat-soluble vitamins A and D are well absorbed in the small intestine in the presence of fat after oral administration. Higher amounts of fat-soluble vitamins accumulate in the liver and are therefore more toxic than water-soluble vitamins.
PIKOVIT® D vitamin and mineral tablets are sugar-free. PIKOVIT® D tablets contain the sweetening agents maltitol and mannitol. They have no adverse effect on teeth.

How to take, the dosage

In children aged 4 to 6 years: 1 tablet 4-5 times a day.
Children aged 7 to 14 years: 1 tablet 5-7 times a day.
The course of treatment is 1 month, the need for longer treatment is determined by the doctor.
The drug is taken by children under 14 years of age upon a doctor’s recommendation.
Special Instructions
Higher doses than recommended should not be given to children.
Long-term use of high doses may cause hypervitaminosis A and D, although the chance of overdose is minimal.
Consult your doctor if you need to take other multivitamin-mineral complexes at the same time.
Diabetic patients can take Picovit D shell tablets, but they should keep in mind that the daily dose contains 2.4 to 4.2 grams of sugar. Each coated tablet contains 0.6 sugar.
Patients with diabetes may take PICOVIT D. At the same time, remember that one lozenge contains 0.9 g maltitol, i.e. a daily dose of 3.6-6.3 g maltitol. Insulin is required for the metabolism of maltitol, although due to slow hydrolysis and absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, there is little need for insulin.
The energy value of maltitol (10 kJ/g or 2.4 kcal/g) is less than that of sucrose.
Contraindications
Overdose
Long-term use (more than 1 month) of very high doses may lead to hypervitaminosis D and A; however, the risk of overdose with Picovit D is unlikely.
Long-term administration of high doses of vitamin B6 may lead to a case of peripheral neuropathy. Mannitol and maltitol are insufficiently absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and in high doses may lead to diarrhea and flatulence.
The laxative effect develops when more than 60 g of maltitol (66 coated tablets) or more than 10 g of mannitol (68 coated tablets) per day are taken. Treatment is symptomatic.
